Why is it important to study literature and different representative
texts and authors from the world?

Literature is said to be the mirror of the society. Through


it, we could be able to perceive vast It is also important to study different texts and their
knowledge and insight on the traditions, beliefs, culture, authors around the world, because it represent their

Sylva Fischerová was born in 1963 in Prague. She grew up
in the Moravian town of Olomouc as a daughter of non-
Marxist philosopher whose works were banished under
communist rule. She returned to Prague to study
philosophy and physics, and later Greek and Latin, at
Charles University where she now teaches ancient Greek
literature and philosophy. She has published seven volumes
of poems in Czech, and her poetry has been translated and
published in numerous languages. An earlier selection of
her poems, The Tremor of Racehorses, translated by Ian
and Jarmila Milner, was published by Bloodaxe in 1990.
She recently began to write prose, and two books of her
stories (Miracle and Passage), as well as two books for
children, appeared since 2005. The Swing in the Middle of
Chaos: Selected Poems, co-translated with Stuart Friebert,
was published by Bloodaxe in 2010.

In Korean literature, South Korea’s modern history is marked by turbulent changes that have
shaped its national psyche. From Japanese occupation to the Korean War which tore the nation
apart, and the democratic uprisings of the 1980s, those national events have shaped a
generation of writers. So here are some representative texts and their authors from Korea.

 Ko Un
Buddhist monk, democracy activist and poet. Ko Un
has donned many hats in his long career. In his works
like Ten Thousand Lives, He gives voice to the many
individuals who have passed through his life. Popular
speech and traditional poetic form meld, bringing to life
these characters. Other volumes by Ko include The
Sound of My Waves: Selected Poems 1960-1990,
Abiding Places, Korea North & South and Songs for
Tomorrow: A Collection of Poems 1961-2001.
 Park Wan Suh

Also experienced Korean war just like


Ko Un. Her first work is Namok or “The
Naked Tree” which deals with the
trauma of the war. It won an award from
Women’s Donga, a women’s magazine.

 Hwang Soo-yong [Hwang Sok-yong]

He experienced American war which


inspired him to published the Pagoda in
1970.
 O Jung-Hee [O Chong-hui]

She has won many awards in literature that represents


the success of women writers in Korea, her work such as
River of Fire is a united collection of women being the
protagonist.

 Ch’oe Hyon-mu [Choe Yun]

One of the most recognized writer of contemporary


Korea. Her literary work “The last of Hanako”
explores the gender roles and biases in South
Korea’s patriarchal society.
