THE NATURE OF
EARTHQUAKE
THE NATURE OF
EARTHQUAKE
 This energy can be generated by a
sudden dislocation of segments of the
crust, volcanic eruption, or a man-made
explosion.
 Most of the destructive earthquakes,
are caused by dislocations of crust.

THE NATURE OF
EARTHQUAKE
 The vibrations are high enough frequency to be
audible, while others are of very low frequency
and thus inaudible
 These waves travel from the source of the
earthquake known as the hypocentre or focus
to more distant locations along surface of and
through the earth.
 Some of the vibrations are of high enough
frequency to be audible, some are very low
frequency thus its inaudible
EARTHQUAKE TERMINOLOGY
EARTHQUAKE TERMINOLOGY
 The Epicenter of an
earthquake is the point of
the surface of the ground
directly above the focus
 Focus is the point on the
fault where rupture occurs
and the location from the
seismic waves are release
 A fault is a fracture in
Earth’s crust along which
two blocks slip relative to
each other
