The Law In the Heart

• 31Behold, the days come, saith the

LORD, that I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel, and
with the house of Judah:
• 32 Not according to the covenant that I
made with their fathers in the day [that]
I took them by the hand to bring them
out of the land of Egypt; …

Jeremiah 31:31,32
• …which my covenant they brake,
although I was an husband unto them,
saith the LORD:

Jeremiah 31:31,32
• 33 But this [shall be] the covenant that I
will make with the house of Israel;
After those days, saith the LORD, I
will put my law in their inward parts,
and write it in their hearts; and will be
their God, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah 31:33
• 34 And they shall teach no more every
man his neighbour, and every man his
brother, saying, Know the LORD: for
they shall all know me, from the least
of them unto the greatest of them, saith
the LORD: for I will forgive their
iniquity, and I will remember their sin
no more.

Jeremiah 31:34

hath made the first old. Now that which
decayeth and waxeth old [is] ready to
vanish away.

• 1 Now of the things which we have
spoken [this is] the sum: We have such
an high priest, who is set on the right
hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens; In that he saith, A new
[covenant], he hath made the first old.
Now that which decayeth and waxeth
old [is] ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 8:1
• 6 But now hath he obtained a more
excellent ministry, by how much also
he is the mediator of a better covenant,
which was established upon better
promises.

Hebrews 8:6
• The same law that was engraved upon
the tables of stone is written by the
Holy Spirit upon the tables of the heart.
Instead of going about to establish our
own righteousness we accept the
righteousness of Christ. His blood
atones for our sins. His obedience is
accepted for us.

Patriarchs and Prophets 372

• Then the heart renewed by the Holy
Spirit will bring forth “the fruits of the
Spirit.” Through the grace of Christ we
shall live in obedience to the law of
God written upon our hearts. Having
the Spirit of Christ, we shall walk even
as He walked.

Patriarchs and Prophets 372

• Through the prophet He declared of
Himself, “I delight to do Thy will, O
My God: yea, Thy law is within My
heart.” Psalm 40:8. And when among
men He said, “The Father hath not left
Me alone; for I do always those things
that please Him.” John 8:29.

Patriarchs and Prophets 372

• The apostle Paul clearly presents the
relation between faith and the law
under the new covenant. He says:
“Being justified by faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ.” “Do we then make void the
law through faith? God forbid: yea, we
establish the law.”

Patriarchs and Prophets 373

• “For what the law could not do, in that
it was weak through the flesh”—it
could not justify man, because in his
sinful nature he could not keep the law
—“God sending His own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin in the flesh:…

Patriarchs and Prophets 373

• …that the righteousness of the law
might be fulfilled in us, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the
Spirit.”Romans 5:1; 3:31; 8:3, 4.

Patriarchs and Prophets 373

• The law of the LORD [is] perfect,
converting the soul: the testimony of
the LORD [is] sure, making wise the
simple.

Psalms 19:7
• “The law of the Lord is perfect,
converting the soul.” Psalm 19:7.
Without the law, men have no just
conception of the purity and holiness of
God or of their own guilt and
uncleanness. They have no true
conviction of sin and feel no need of
repentance. Not seeing their lost
condition as violators of God’s law,…

Great Controversy 468

• …they do not realize their need of the
atoning blood of Christ. The hope of
salvation is accepted without a radical
change of heart or reformation of life.
Thus superficial conversions abound,
and multitudes are joined to the church
who have never been united to Christ.

Great Controversy 468

• 17 Think not that I am come to destroy
the law, or the prophets: I am not come
to destroy, but to fulfil.
• 18 For verily I say unto you, Till
heaven and earth pass, one jot or one
tittle shall in no wise pass from the law,
till all be fulfilled.

Matthew 5:17-18
• 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one

the same shall be called great in the
kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:19
• 20 For I say unto you, That except your
righteousness shall exceed [the
righteousness] of the scribes and

the kingdom of heaven.
• 21 Ye have heard that it was said by
them of old time, Thou shalt not kill;
and whosoever shall kill shall be in
danger of the judgment:

Matthew 5:20-21
• 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever
is angry with his brother without a
cause shall be in danger of the
judgment: and whosoever shall say to
his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of
the council: but whosoever shall say,
Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell
fire.

Matthew 5:22
• 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the
altar, and there rememberest that thy
brother hath ought against thee;

and go thy way; first be reconciled to
thy brother, and then come and offer
thy gift.

Matthew 5:23-24

• 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever
looketh on a woman to lust after her
hath committed adultery with her
already in his heart.

Matthew 5:27-28
• 29 And if thy right eye offend thee,
pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for
it is profitable for thee that one of thy
members should perish, and not [that]
thy whole body should be cast into
hell.

Matthew 5:29
• 30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut
it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is
profitable for thee that one of thy
members should perish, and not [that]
thy whole body should be cast into
hell.

evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on
thy right cheek, turn to him the other
also.

Matthew 5:38-39

law, and take away thy coat, let him

him that would borrow of thee turn not
thou away.

Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate
thine enemy.

enemies, bless them that curse you, do

and persecute you;

righteousness without. He who is
righteous within is not hard-hearted
and unsympathetic, but day by day he
grows into the image of Christ, going
on from strength to strength.

Messages to the Young People 35.2

• He who is being sanctified by the truth
will be self-controlled, and will follow
in the footsteps of Christ until grace is
lost in glory. The righteousness by
which we are justified is imputed; the
righteousness by which we are
sanctified is imparted. The first is our
title to heaven, the second is our fitness
for heaven.
