Why APICS exists ?

APICS stands for American Production and Inventory Control Society. This acronym is the original name of a
professional society's now known as APICS, The Association for Operations Management. APICS was founded in
1957 as a resource for supply chain and operations management professionals.

The goal was to:

-Disseminate best practices in supply chain management;

-Innovate in supply chain management;

-Develop systems and methods to create value for customers, members and organizations;
Definition & History of APICS

Definition:

APICS, currently known as the Association for Supply Chain Management is a not-for-profit international education
organization offering certification programs, training tools, and networking opportunities to increase workplace
performance. Formed in 1957, the mission of the organization is to advance end-to-end supply chain management.
APICS merged with the Supply-Chain Council in 2014, and the American Society of Transportation and Logistics in
2015.

History:

In 1957, 20 production control managers in various industries formed the American Production and Inventory
Control Society. The organization later became an international association known as APICS.

development, for example my native country Morocco

Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP)
Definition:

A process to develop tactical plans that provide management the ability to strategically direct its businesses to
achieve competitive advantage on a continuous basis by integrating customer-focused marketing plans for new and
existing products with the management of the supply chain. The process brings together all the plans for the
business (sales, marketing, development, manufacturing, sourcing, and financial) into one integrated set of plans.

Major Attributes of S&OP:

 Connects business planning to tactical planning


 Balance’s supply and demand at the product family level
 Plans at the volume level using aggregate time buckets, not the individual end-product mix level
 Enables in a better understanding of the customer and market opportunities and company capabilities
 Involves sales, marketing, manufacturing, logistics, finance, and other departments
 A demand- and strategy-driven process
Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP)

Objectives of S&OP:

 Supports and measures the business plan


 Ensures that the strategic plans are realistic before being passed to tactical planning
 Enables the organization to effectively manage changes to plans
 Provides for the effective management of finished goods inventories and order backlog to support
customer service
 Enables performance measurement to identify when actual performance has deviated from the plan

Conclusion

The company had originally multiple problems on its supply chain. So, after a deep analysis assessment
of APICS proposed solutions, it appeared to be optimal.

 They managed to reduce the total suppliers from 4 to 2.


 They reduced the submit/freeze time before receipt to 4weeks using data.
 They established a new warehouse in the US that will reduce costs in a remarkable way and nullify
the air transportation.
 They managed to keep the same level service for customers.
 They elaborated a new stock management strategy by defining the optimal quantity to pre-order and
the safety stock.
