MEDIATION
MODEL
BY:
PAGAYON, KRISHA
ABDULLAH, NORON
OBJECTIVES:
AT THE END THE DISCUSSION THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
TO:

• KNOW WHAT IS INTERCESSION-MEDIATION MODEL

• DETERMINE THE ROLES OF SOCIAL WORKERS IN IMM
What is IMM?
• Intercession-Mediation Model or IMM is a response to the often
alienating effects of bureaucratic structures, manipulating them when
necessary and appropriate in the interest of the clients.
• Like the other helping models and approaches, the IMM is applied in the
context of the social work helping process.
• The worker has to do ASSESSMENT, PLANNING, INTERVENTION,
EVALUATION, and TERMINATION.
INTERCESSION-
MEDIATION
MODEL

• Includes negotiating the “ SERVICE JUNGLE” for clients, whether

individually or in groups.

• The worker here “ CONNECTS” the clients to the system’s needed

services until he uses them.
Workers do a number of task on behalf of
the clients.

• They could be an HELPER, FACILITATOR, ESCORT, NEGOTIATOR,

BROKER, MEDIATOR, INTERCESSOR and etc. to ensure rapid service
delivery.
• SCHNEIDERMAN ADDS TO THIS THE UTILIZATION OF NON-
CONSENSUAL STRATEGIES LIKE DIRECT CONFRONTATION,
ADMINISTRATIVE APPEAL, AND THE USE OF JUDICIAL AND
POLITICAL SYSTEMS AS APPROPRIATE. HERE THE SOCIAL
WORKER BECOME AN INTERCESSOR/ADVOCATE.
EXAMPLES:
• Working with women who are denied labor benefits by their employers.
• Juvenile offenders who are arrested.
• Neglected prisoners who should already qualify for parole privileges.
• Slum dwellers who are illegally evicted.
• Farmers who are exploited by their landlords.
• Children who are not accepted in school due to lack od documents.
• IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, THE ADVOCATE MAY BE
REQUIRED TO ARGUE, DISCUSS, BARGAIN, NEGOTIATE, OR
INFLUENCE THE ENVIRONMENT ON FAVOR OF THE CLIENT.
THE MAJORITY OF ADVOCACY EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED ON
OBTAINING ADVANTAGES TO WHICH THE CLIENT IS LEGALLY
ENTITLED.
According to the DSWD, the Filipino client/family that found eligible for
assistance has an average of five problems/needs:

• Material aid
• Problems of being jobless or with irregular or occasional work
• With meager income or no source of support
• Unskilled or with limited skills/education and no schooling
• Family member with disability and etc.
