A brief introduction to Santosh Yadav
Ms. SANTOSH YADAV was born on 10th
October 1967 in village Joniyawas of
Rewari District in Haryana.
In spite of her rural background and in the
prevalent social taboo forbidding education
of girls in rural set up, she was able to
force her way and continue her schooling.
Santosh demonstrated her will power and
proved her mountaineering skill quite early
in her career.

Her fight for education


o In line with the prevailing custom in the family, Santosh had
to make do with the local village school.
o Most of the girls in her village used to get married at sixteen.
Her parents also expected Santosh to do the same.
o She threatened her parents that she would never marry if
she did not get a proper education.
o She left home and got herself enrolled in a school in Delhi.
o When her parents refused to pay for her education, she
politely informed them of her plans to earn money by
working part time to pay her school fees.
o Her parents then agreed to pay for her education.

She graduated from the Maharani
College in Jaipur, in Economic (Honors)
in 1987 and also obtained her NCC 'C'

Amity University at Noida.
She then joined the Uttarkashi Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in
1986 and did her Basic Mountaineering Course from NIM with 'A'
Grading.
In the following year she did Advance Mountaineering Course from
the same institute, also with 'A' Grading.
HER REASON AND MOTIVATION
TO START MOUNTAINEERING
▪ When Santosh lived in Kasturba hostel, she
could watch the villagers climbing Aravalli hills
from her room.
▪ She was fascinated by the sport of mountain
climbing when she saw the mountaineers
through her room’s window.
▪ She had an innate desire to achieve new heights right from childhood.
▪ The mountaineers agreed to let her join them and motivated her to
climb the mountain.
▪ She succeeded in climbing the mountain and went on to become the
first women to climb Mount Everest twice.
▪ Once she completed her training at Uttarkashi she went on expeditions
every year.

When EXPERIENCE
Santosh Yadav first scaled Mt. Everest, she
became the youngest woman in the world to
achieve the feat.
• She climbed the peak first time in May 1992 and
again in May 1993 with an Indo-Nepalese Tram.
• During her Everest mission of 1992 she saved the
life of another climber, Mohan Singh, by sharing
oxygen with him.
• She also tried to help a mountaineer who lay

Unfurling the Indian flag on the top of the
world was a spiritual moment for her and she
felt proud as an Indian.
I. The culmination of Santosh's hard work &
sincerity came in 1992. After 4 years Santosh
asked the Aravalli mountaineers if she could
join them.
II. At 20 years of age Santosh Yadav climbed
Mt. Everest & became the youngest woman
in the world to achieve the feat .
III. Her climbing skills , fitness, mental strength,
concern for others, desire to work together
impressed her seniors & found a special
place in hearts of fellow climbers.

I. Santosh Yadav is currently an officer in
the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. She was a part
of the nine-nation international climbing camp-
cum-expedition to Nun Kun in 1989.
II. Yadav was awarded the National Adventure
Award 1994 and Padma Shri in 2000.
