Positive Effects

of Rural-Urban
Migration
By Nokutenda Madzikwa
Urbanization
01
Urbanization often arises through rural-urban
migration. Rural means the countryside and urban
means the city. As people migrate from the
countryside to the city, an increasing proportion of
the inhabitants of a country live in a city, and that is
referred to as urbanization.
High birth rates in rural areas have resulted in an
abundance of workers and many people have moved
to the city. The urbanization rate is the speed at
which the degree of urbanization is increasing. If a
lot of people already live in the city, relatively few
people will join, which means that the urbanization
rate drops at a high urbanization level.

In 2020, 32.24% of Zimbabwe's total population

lived in urban areas and cities.
The Positive
02 Effects
Many opportunities and attraction of big cities pull
large numbers of people to big cities.
 Unemployment is reduced and people get better job
opportunities.

 Migration helps in improving the quality of the people’s

lives.

 It helps to improve social life of people as they learn about

new culture, customs, and languages.

 Migration of skilled workers leads to a greater economic

growth of the region.

 Children get better opportunities for higher education.

 The population density is reduced and the birth rate

decreases.
India is an example of an emerging and developing country (EDC).
Each year thousands of people move to the city of Mumbai from
rural areas. People move to Mumbai because the rural areas they
India
leave have many push factors and the city has lots of pull factors.
People think that the city will provide lots of opportunities such as:
Positives
socially - better housing and services, eg healthcare and education
 increased economically-active elements of the community
economically - more jobs and higher wages
 increase in the cultural wealth
environmentally - better living conditions with a safer environment
(less chance of natural disasters)  more knowledge and skills in the city community
