objective : Examiners use a checklist for evaluating the trainees

Structured: Trainee sees the same problem and perform the same tasks in the same time frame

Clinical: The task are representative of those faced in real clinical situation

OSCE : objective structured CLINICAL examination.

A multi dimensional practical examination of clinical skills , as a tool for assessing clinical
competence.

An OSCE is a modern type of examination often used in the health sciences (e.g. medicine, nursing,
pharmacy, dentistry) to test clinical skill performance and competence in skills such as
communication, clinical examination, medical procedures, prescription-writing, manipulation
techniques, and interpretation of results.

DEFINITION

 OSCE is an approach to the assessment of clinical competence in which the


components of the competence are assessed in a
planned or structured way,
with attention being paid to the objectivity of the examination
(Harden, 1988).

list, Max. score, Roll no • No. of evaluators per station = 2. • No. of students per station = 1. •
Move in one direction (ring of bell)
 Instructions for students • Display Roll no prominently. • Number of stations = n •
Proceed in one direction • Time allotted = ‘t’ min (each station) • Start & end of time (ring
of bell) • Clear instructions given at each station • No interaction with examiners • No
negative marking

 REQUIREMENT FOR CONDUCTING OSCE/OSPE: Standardized Patient(SP):-
Standardized patients are individuals trained to portray a patient with a particular disease
or condition; thus affording hands on testing of students. Use of standardized patients
increase reliability across different stations.
 Station and required Procedure articles:- Number of stations are determined by number
of students and number of activities for which examiners want to evaluate students.
Arrange necessary articles in advance and prepare different stations
