In terms of sociology:

• A primary social group consisting of parents and their offspring the principal function of which is
provision for its members.
Types of famliy
Nuclear family
A mother ,father & one or more children.
Single parent family
Only one parent & one or more children.
Blended family
Two parents,one or both of whom have children from a previous relationship.
Extended (joint) family
All the immediate relatives of a family grandparents,aunts,cousins,etc.
Joint family(Extended family)
 Joint family is also known as extended family.
 The term joint family defines a family that extends beyond the nuclear family.
 It consist of grandparents,aunts,uncles& cousins all living nearby or in a same household

Nuclear famliy
 Nuclear family is also known as conjugal elementary or traditional family.
 A family consisting of only a couple.(ie.mother and father) and their children.
 Nuclear family does not consist of grandparents,aunts or uncles.
Advantages

Conclusion
Nuclear or joint families both have benefits and problems;they both
have their own advantages as well disadvantage.
It’s matter of personal choise and also depends on time and
environment.
A newly married couple would prefer a nuclear family but can move
back with parents and sibiling when become parents themselves.
