GITAM university uses both absolute and relative grading systems. For absolute grading, letter grades like A, B, C etc. are assigned based on the marks earned in a course. For relative grading, letter grades are assigned based on a student's performance relative to other students in the same class. A student's semester and cumulative grade point averages (SGPA and CGPA) are calculated based on the grades and credits of all courses taken. Absolute grading is used for smaller classes while relative grading is used for larger classes with 21 or more students.

Grades and Grading System • GITAM follows mixed mode of evaluation - Absolute Grading - Relative Grading
• End of semester – ‘Letter Grade’ for each course in
which they are enrolled, based on their performance
• Letter Grade & Corresponding Grade point represents
the outcomes of qualitative & quantitative assessments of a students performance in a course. Absolute Grading (AG) • AG – marks earned by the student falls within one of the ranges (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P, F, Ab, S, U, I, R, W).
• Ex., A student earns 72 marks in a course – Then
student will secure ‘A’ Grade in that course. Contd., • AG will be adopted for the following courses. 1. Theory courses for student strength < 21 2. TP Courses (Combined) for student strength < 21 3. Lab/Practical courses 4. Project courses 5. Internship courses 6. Skill development courses 7. Audit/Mandatory courses 8. In any course, if the students strength ≤ 20 Grade Points & Symbols in Absolute Grading (Final letter grade will be awarded in each course @ EoS) Relative Grading (RG) • RG system – Grades based on the other students scores in the same class.
• Academic standing/merit of the student in the class.
• Class – Cohort of students who are taught by the
same faculty & have undergone the same assessment pattern.
• Evaluation procedure is adopted for T & P combined
courses with a class strength ≥ 21. Grades & Grade Points in RG system Relative Grading (RG) - Procedure • Class average mark (μ) is taken as the midpoint of ‘B+ (Good)’ grade & relative to this depending on this sigma (σ, standard deviation) value Computing Grade Point Average (SGPA,CGPA)
• Semester Grade Point Average • Cumulative Grade Point Average
(SGPA) (CGPA)
• n – No of courses taken by the • m – No of courses graded to date
student in a semester • Ci – No of credits allotted to the • Ci – No of credits allotted to the course ‘i’. course ‘i’. • Gi – Grade points secured by the • Gi – Grade points secured by the student in course ‘i’. student in course ‘i’.
