BREAKDOWN OF

COMPOSITE
INSULATION

PREPARED BY: JERWIN JOHN FLORES

Considerations to determine the
performance of the System

• The stress distribution at different parts of

the insulation system is distorted due to the
component dielectric constant and
conductivities,
• the breakdown characteristics at the surface
are affected by the insulation boundaries of
various components,
• the internal or partial discharge products of
one component invariable affect the other
components in the system, and
• the chemical ageing products of one
component also affect the performance of
other components in the system.

Ageing (Deteriorate)
It is the process by which the electrical and mechanical
properties of insulation normally becomes worse in condition
with time.

Insulation Ageing are due to:

Electron and
Chemical
Oxidation Degradation
Irradiation Ion
Bombardment
Partial Discharge Test (PD
Test)
It is performed to assess electrical insulation
health. PD is best described as a failure of part
of an insulation system to withstand the
electrical field applied to it.

PD test are used to estimate:

• Discharge magnitude (unit: pico-coulombs)
• Discharge Inception (Ui, corona discharge)
• E x t i n c t i o n Vo l t a g e s ( U e )
