WAVES

STATIONARY WAVES
• Stationary waves, also known as standing waves oscillate with
different amplitude and do not transfer energy.

• The peak amplitude of the wave oscillations at any point in space is

constant with respect to time, and the oscillations at different points
throughout the wave are in phase.

• The points where the amplitude of the wave is ZERO or where there
is no motion at all are nodes and where the amplitude is largest is
called the antinode

Examples of Stationary waves:

◦ Strings on a guitar ◦ two people shaking either

end of a jump rope
->If they shake in sync the rope can
form a regular pattern of waves
oscillating up and down, with
stationary points along the rope
where the rope is almost still (nodes)
and points where the arc of the rope
is maximum (antinodes).

TRAVELLING WAVES
◦ Travelling wave is a wave with a disturbance which moves
along a medium. It transports energy from one point to
another point.
◦ Travelling waves are made of crests and troughs.
◦ The travelling wave moves with constant speed. The wave is
caused due to the movement of a particle which disturbs the
next particle adjacent to it.
◦ Examples include gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet waves,
visible light, infrared waves, microwaves, and radio waves.

Difference between Stationary and travelling
Waves

The main difference between Stationary waves and

Travelling waves is, Stationary does not carry any
energy while Travelling waves carry energy from one
place to another.
The stationary waves oscillate with different
amplitude while travelling waves oscillate with the
same amplitude.
