TYPES
OF
WAVES
Here is where our presentation begins!!
Waves
What are waves?
Waves are a way of transferring energy from place to place.
Waves
There are two main types of waves :
• Transverse Waves
• Longitudinal Waves
Transverse waves Longitudinal Waves
A longitudinal wave is one in which the
Transverse wave is one that vibrates, or oscillates
vibrations, or oscillations, are along the
at right angles to the direction in which the
direction in which the energy or wave is
energy or wave is moving
moving.
Examples of Transverse Examples of
waves Longitudinal Waves
Example transverse wave include light waves Example of longitudinal waves
and wave travelling on the surface of the water include sound waves.
Light Waves

Light waves are transverse wave. They have both

wave and particles. There are many small particles
called photon. It is travelled in straight line.
There is also a ray and a beam in light wave.
A ray is the straight line that represents the path of
light.
A beam is a group of parallel rays.

Light Wave = 3×10^8 m/s

Sound Waves

A sound wave is the pattern of disturbance Sound wave = 343 m/s

caused by the movement of energy traveling
through a medium (such as air, water or any
other liquid or solid matter) as it propagates
away from the source of the sound.
Electromagnetic Waves
Radio Waves
Radio wave have longest wavelength in
the electromagnetic spectrum. They are
used mainly for communication. They are
also used in radio, television etc.
Microwave
Microwaves are used for communications, radar
and cooking foods. Microwaves oven cooks more
quickly then normal oven. Microwaves are also
used in telephone, satellite etc.
Infrared Radition
Infrared radition is also used in remote controls for
televisions ,DVD players and stereo systems. The human
body can be harmed by too much in infrared radiation,
which can cause skin burn.
It is also used in heater, remote control etc.
Visible Light
Visible light is the part of electromagnetic spectrum that
is visible to the human eye. We use to see it. Visible light
can be detected by the sensors in digital camera, and
used to take photographs or videos.
Ultraviolet Ray
Ultraviolet (UV) light is the part of the light emitted by the sun. UV radiation is
harmful to human eyes and can damage the skin .Ultraviolet radiation can also
cause skin cancer and blindness .The ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere
absorbs large quantities of the Sun's UV radiation.
X- Ray
X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, similar to visible
light. X-rays have higher energy and can pass through most
objects, including the body.
Gamma Ray
Gamma rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation that results from a
redistribution of electric charge within a nucleus. Gamma rays are
essentially very energetic X rays. Gamma ray can cause damage to liver
cells. The damage can cause mutation, which can lead to cancer. It is also
use in cancer treatment
