9.3 Reaction with acids

(1)Reactions between metals and acids

Metal + Acid Salt + hydrogen

Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid magnesium chloride + hydrogen

Zinc + sulfuric acid zinc sulfate + hydrogen

* Some metals react with acids producing hydrogen gas.

CB Pg 112 Q1,2
q
Testing for hydrogen
- When we see bubbles forming during a chemical reaction, gas is
produced.
- When a lighted splint is placed at the mouth of the tube, hydrogen
gas burns with a squeaky pop.
- Squeaky pop indicates the presence of hydrogen.
- Hydrogen gas is lighter than air.
- When hydrogen is reacting with oxygen in the air, to form water.
hydrogen + oxygen water
q
(2)Reaction between carbonates and acid
Metal carbonate + Acid salt + water + carbon dioxide

Calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide

limestone
Copper carbonate + hydrochloric acid copper chloride + water + carbon dioxide

* Carbonates react with acids producing carbon dioxide gas.

Testing for carbon dioxide
• When the lighted splint is placed at the mouth of the tube,
Carbon dioxide will make the splint go out.
• Carbon dioxide makes limewater go cloudy/milky/chalky.
