 SARS CoV-2 previously known as 2019nCoV
was first reported in Wuhan city, china on dec 31-
2019
INTRODUCTIO
N Various other virulent strains of the same were
reported in the past
 SARS CoV in 2003
 MERS Cov in 2012
 SARS-CoV 2 belongs to the family of
CORONA virus(named due to presence of
crown like arrangement of glycoproteins)

SARS-CoV 2 is RNA virus

MORPHOLOG  Single stranded
Y  Positive sense
 Non segmented
 Helical in symmetry
 Enveloped
 Petal or club shaped projections like crown

Spike protein

Nucleocapsid protein
Envelop protein
STRUCTURE Membrane protein
 Helps in the attachment of the virus to the human cell
 Has two sub units S1 and S2
 1) S1 subunit : contains the receptor binding
domain which recognizes and binds to host d
receptor
SPIKE  2) S2 subunit: mediates the viral cell
GLYCOPROTEIN( membrane fusion
S-PROTEIN)  ACE 2 receptor on the human cell is the binding site
of the spike glycoprotein
 Along with ACE 2 receptor TMPRSS-
2(transmembrane serine protease-2) acting as a co-
receptor helps in the entry of the human cell
 TMPRSS-2 also increases the affinity of the host cell
to virus
 Helps in the trans membrane transport of the
MEMBRANE nutrients
GLYCOPROTEIN(  Helps in the formation of the envelope
M-PROTEIN)  Helps in the process of the budding
 Enveloped protein is a lipid bilayer
ENVELOPED
 Inner layer is derived from the virus
PROTEIN(E-  Outer layer is derived from the host
PROTEIN)
 Though the exact function of this protein is not
NUCLEOCAPSI
known, it is theorised to interfere with the host

 This is the mutation of the amino acid at position
614 in the spike protein
 Change in the amino acid from the D(aspartic
acid) to G(Glycine)
D614G-  This resulted in the global shift of the SARS
MUTATION CoV-2 from D614 to G614

 G614 variant highly transmissible compared to

the D614 variant however the virulence of the
G614 is same as D614
