VERBS WITH AND
WITHOUT OBJECTS
“What is a complete sentence”?
1, When we speak, we often say
things
like:
All right! Good
Want any help?
They are complete units of
meaning, but they are not real
sentence
2. A simple sentence is a complete
unit of meaning which contains a
subject and a verb followed by
other words which make up the
meaning, so:
The bird flew away a sentence
The man in the street not a
sentence
3. The subject may be “hidden”
Open the door, = really means
You open the door
Exercise 1
Read each group of words below and decide if it is a complete
sentence or not. Write “Yes” for the complete one, and “Not”
the incomplete one in the space available. If it is not a complete
sentence, Identify the MISSING element
1.When I lost my job
2. I wanted to make a fresh start.
3. Interviewing for a job in a factory
4. He was unable to return to school
5.On the tram saw a lonely woman
6. Choosing a career is an important step

WHO or WHAT does what
1. A complete sentence has a subject
and verb and relate a complete of

The way of building an effective
sentence is by using the WHO or
WHAT does what?
In this patterns, The subject is the does
of the action in the verb
2. When we always have to use an
object after some verbs: e.g. heat,
contain, enjoy, hit. We call the verb as
transitive, We have to say:
He enjoys his meals
3. Some Verbs never take an object: e.g.
Ache, arrive, come faint, go, sleep.
We call these Intransitive verbs. We
have to say:
We arrived at 11
4. Some verbs can be used transitive and
intransitively: e.g. Begin, drop, hurt, open, win, etc
We can say:
The team won the game (Transitive)
The team won (Intransitive)
Exercise 1
Write sentences for the following subject. Thing
about what the subject does or did or will do
that will your verb.
Example:
The policeman
What does he do?
The policeman arrested the drunk diver

Sentences with LINKING VERB like “ BE” and
“SEEM”
Verbs like be (am is are, was, were, been) and
seem (appear, look, taste ) are LINKING
VERBS” They have an object. The word we use
after be or seem)etc. Tells us about the subject.
In grammar we call this, a complement, because
it “ Completes” the sentence by telling us about
the subject. In the example:
He is ill
She seem tired
The word ill and tired tell us about HE and SHE
A complement may be: ATTENTION!

Adjective + Noun.
