All about power series solution of first ordinary differential equations
FIRST ORDER DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
We start by considering equations in which only the first derivative of the function appears.
Definition
• A first order differential equation is an equation of the form F(t,y,y˙)=0F(t,y,y˙)=0. A
solution of a first order differential equation is a function f(t)f(t) that makes F(t,f(t),f′
(t))=0F(t,f(t),f′(t))=0 for every value of tt.
Here, FF is a function of three variables which we label tt, yy, and y˙y˙. It is understood
that y˙y˙ will explicitly appear in the equation although tt and yy need not. The term "first
order'' means that the first derivative of yy appears, but no higher order derivatives do.
Example
• The equation from Newton's law of cooling, y˙=k(M−y)y˙=k(M−y) is a first order differential
equation; F(t,y,y˙)=k(M−y)−y˙F(t,y,y˙)=k(M−y)−y˙.
INTRODUCTION
• In many “ENGINEERING” applications, we come across the differential equations which
are having coefficients.
• So, for solving this types of problems we have different methods
• POWER SERIES METHOD.
BASIC CONCEPTS
• POWER SERISE:~ A series from
• Assuming that term by term differentiation is valid , then differentiate eq. term wise to get
y’ , y’’.. And substitute the values in eq.
• Collect the coefficients of like powers of() and equate them to “0”, or make the exponent
on the x to be the same.
STEPS FOR THE SOLUTION OF O.D.E BY POWER
SERIES METHOD
• Collect the coefficients of like powers of() and equate them to “0”, or make the exponent
on the x to be the same.
• Substituting these values of cm in eq. to get series solution of equation ...
