Pest outbreak is unpredictable in fields, and according to Food and Agriculture Organization (2021) up
to 40 percent of global production is lost annually due to pest. In order to prevent this kind of lost,
early detection and management is the best way to prevent it. But the problem is manual pest
monitoring in fields is time consuming and may be hampered by lack of reliable or cost-effective
sampling techniques. In order to accomplish the task, drones are highly useful for on site detection of
problems so as to undertake corrective measures instantly. With the use of high resolution image
processing taken by the drone a software will analyze the color of the plant parts and determine if there
is an pest or disease outbreak. Here in the Philippines Filipino farmers are already aging and not as
open to learning, much less adopting, new technologies. This research will be a stepping stone to help
agriculture sector of the Philippines to encourage them to engage in using technology in farming.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
DRONES: INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR
USE IN PRECISION PEST MANAGEMENT
Fernando H Iost Filho and colleagues (2020) run an experiment using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle or
drone. They believe that an early detection and prevention of a pest outbreak by arthropods will help
the farm to establish well and crop losses accrue. Pest monitoring is time-consuming and may be
hampered by lack of reliable or cost-effective sampling techniques. Thus, they argue that an important
research challenge associated with enhanced sustainability of pest management in modern agriculture
is developing and promoting improved crop monitoring procedures. Biotic stress, such as herbivory by
arthropod pests, elicits physiological defense responses in plants, leading to changes in leaf reflectance.
Advanced imaging technologies can detect such changes, and can, therefore, be used as noninvasive
crop monitoring methods. Sensing and actuation drones could potentially contribute to the prevention
of pest outbreaks.
DRONES IN INSECT PEST MANAGEMENT
According to KK. S. Subramanian et al., Frontiers in agronomy (2021) the major components
in precision agriculture is crop health monitoring, which includes irrigation, fertilization,
pesticide sprays, and timely harvest of the crop. Further, the progressive change in growth
and development is critical in crop monitoring and taking suitable decisions to maintain
health status. In order to accomplish the task, drones are highly useful for on site detection of
problems so as to undertake corrective measures instantly. Drones can be employed in almost
all agricultural field operations and are considered excellent tools for rapid, reliable, and non-
destructive detection of field problems. This review provides panoramic views of drone
technology and its application in the management of pests in a digital agriculture era.
THE INFLUENCE OF DRONE MONITORING
ON CROP HEALTH AND HARVEST SIZE
In the paper of Marthinus Reinecke et al., (2017) they discussed the benefits of
drones in agriculture, their limitations, and illustrating from examples of how
drones operate on farms. Different features of drones assists farmers in
maximizing their harvest by detecting problems early, and managing the crops
using specific camera to detect pest. The article concludes by recommending
that more farmers invest in drone technology to better their agricultural
outputs.
