2. Letters to Santa: Canada Post Announces
Changes
The Canadian postal service has a long tradition of
handling Santa’s mail. Since the seventies, any letter they
receive which is addressed to Santa Claus is read by
volunteers and is sent a personal response, signed by
Santa.

Recently, Canada Post realized that they

often receive two letters for Santa, one sent from home
and one sent from the child’s classroom. As a result,
Canada Post is changing how they respond in order to
avoid sending conflicting messages.
Now letters sent from a classroom will receive a
generic, poster-sized group response, addressed to every
child in that class. However,
SLIDESMANIA
letters sent from home will still receive a personal
message from Santa himself.
Kids often take the opportunity to ask Santa questions
in their letters, such as “How many cookies do you eat?”,
“Are the elves driving you crazy?”, and even “Does
Rudolph have a girlfriend?” Volunteers always make their
best effort to answer children’s questions so as to make
the experience as authentic as possible.
SLIDESMANIA
The tradition of answering letters addressed to Santa –
which were previously labelled as “undeliverable” –
began among postal workers in 1974. Worried that
children would be disappointed by the lack of response,
they began volunteering their time every year to ensure
that every child would hear back from Santa Claus.
Canada Post created an official letter-

response program in 1983, and by 2011 Santa’s mail was
being handled with the help of over 11,000 volunteers.
They answer approximately 1 million letters each year,
regardless of the country of origin, and always manage to
reply in the language in which the letter was written.
Santa has even been given an official address, which is
Santa Claus, North Pole H0H
SLIDESMANIA
0H0, Canada. This unique postal code was given to Santa
as a nod to his famous laugh “Ho ho ho!” So if you want
to send Santa a letter this year, it is free, but make sure to
send it before December 11 if you want to get a response.
