Mini Hacksaw Powered by Beam Engine

INTRODUCTION
In this project, the output of a Beam Engine is used to drive a reciprocating saw to
cut timber. It is intended to have a rotating reciprocating saw. Reciprocating saws
driven with electric power are a common feature. But in places where electricity is
scarce, or absent, it is difficult to operate these Equipments. Beam engine can be
operated even in places where electricity is totally absent. A beam engine is a
design of stationary engine.
The saw was one of the first great innovations of the Metal Age. It was developed
with smelted copper, from which a blade could be cast. It was in this time that the
modem form of the saw began to come into play. Some of the saws used resembled
hacksaw blades of today.

LITERATURE SURVEY
 Rahman, K.H.U.(2007) : A beam engine is a design of stationary steam
engine. Here use a rotating reciprocating saw instead of fly wheel.
 Khan Habeeb Ur Rahman : A stationary engine is used not to propel a
vehicle but to drive a piece of immobile equipment such as a pump or
power tools.
 R. Chandra Mouli et al., : On hacksaws, as with more frame saws, the
blade can be mounted with the teeth facing toward or away from the
handle.
 Mr. Naveen varmani et al., : Conventional power hacksaw in order to
achieve high productivity of work piece then the power saw machine
using double hacksaw blade.

OBJECTIVE
 A beam engine is a design of stationary steam engine.

 Beam engine is used to achieve hack saw cutting motion using a circular cutting
disc.

 This beam now heals achieve a back and forth cutting motion as required by the
hacksaw blade.

METHODOLOGY
 Construct a small bed to rest the work piece.
 Hack saw cutting motion using a circular cutting disc.
 Motorized disc used to drive a connector which connected to an overhead
beam
 The overhead beam has a connecting rod it connected to a mini hacksaw
blade.
 Motorized disc below is turned on the connecting arm starts reciprocating
the overhead beam
  This beam now heals achieve a back and forth cutting motion as required
by the hacksaw blade.

WORKING
Hacksaws are used to cut thin and soft metals the operation of the unit is simplified to a few simple
operations involving a DC motor and overhead liver arrangement. There are numerous systems in hacksaw
machine.
The hacksaw is the metal cutting machine tool designed to cut metal by converting rotary motion into
reciprocating motion. The machine exclusively intended for mass production and they represent fasten and
more efficient way to cut a metal. Hacksaws are used to cut thin and soft metals the operation of the unit is
simplified to a few simple operations involving a overhead lever arrangement. The overhead is pivoted in
middle of supporting frame, the function of this liver is transfer or convert rotary motion from motor into
reciprocating motion to the cutting blade for back and forth moment for the continuous or regular back and
forward moment. The main function of mini hacksaw is to cut thin and soft metals by reciprocating motion.

Mini Hacksaw Powered by Beam Engine

APPLICATIONS
 It is used in small scale industries and in large scale industries.

 It useful when materials need to be cut in hazardous areas such as oil

& gas refineries, chemical factories or oil rigs as well as dusty and
wet environments where electric tools are not effective.

 It is valuable tools in production environments such as pallet repair,

shipbuilding or fiberglass workshops, because they will last longer
than electric tools.

ADVANTAGES
 The cutting speed can be varied according to our needs by adjusting the
timer.

 It is portable.

 It does not have any prime mover like electric motor.

 Simple in construction than mechanical hacksaw.

 It is compact one.

 Less maintenance.

Mini Hacksaw Powered by Beam Engine

DISADVANTAGES

 Only smaller size and soft metal can be cut.

 It is costlier than the mechanical hacksaw because of compressor

unit.

 Less efficiency when compressor to mechanical device.

 Leakage of air affects the working of the unit.

CONCLUSION
This being a creative project, there are no particular instances of this type
of machine being available in the commercial market. But the aim of this
project is to show that this type of machine too is an option for wood
working industry in remote places in the absence of electricity. Further
improvements include using reduction gears, to vary the speed of the
circular saw, having an adjustable bed with slots for adjusting the table
length, so that even large sizes of timber can be sawed by varying the
distance of the table and the size of the circular saw.
