The Indigenous Art of

the Muslim
Mindanao
• Each region in the Philippines produce
different products and crafts. Some have been
done by great forefathers of ethnic groups.
They are Tausug, Maranao, Samal,
Maguindanao, Yakan, Sanggil, Badjao.
The Maranaos are known for their purple and
gold malong, a traditional tube garment.
• The maranaos call their ornamental design OKIR a
general term for both the scroll and the geometric
form. The scroll is the dominant feature in the men’s
work composed of various spiral forms. In contrast,
the zigzag and angular forms are the dominating
motifs in the women’s geometric art. In their language
the scroll is called okir a datu ( gentlemen’s design.)
as distinguish from okir a bay ( ladies ‘design)
referring to the geometric forms.
SARIMANOK
• The most well- known of the old designs in the
sarimanok the figure represents a fowl with
wings feathered tail, and a head decorated
vwith ornaments of scrolled and painted motif
of leaves, spirals, and feather-like forms.
• Aside from the sarimanok, there is another
popular design called naga or snake.
• Naga meaning DRAGON.
