Snaeng

Is made from the horn of


the water buffalo.
Khloy

Is a bamboo flute with six


to seven finger holes. It is
often used in the Mahori
ensemble.
Krapeu

 Is a long three-string zither that is plucked. It


is similar to the Jakhē of Thailand.
Tro

Is a bowed lute believe to be derived


from the Chinese er-hu. This is used
to accompany vocal music and is
used in the Kar and Mahori
ensemble.
Roneat

Is a generic term for a xylophone or


metallophone type of instrument. It
is often made from wood or
bamboo which are strung together
with chords and is suspended over a
boat-shaped resonator.
Korng vung

Is a set of sixteen bowl-shaped


gongs in a circular frame used in
the Pinn Peat ensemble.
Sampho

Is a small barrel drum made from


hollowed wood and calfskin at its
head.
Thaun-rumanae

Is a set of two drums. One shape


of a goblet and is made from clay
or wood (thaun), and the other
one is a flat frame drum
(rumanae)

Ranat thum

Is a box-shaped

Khawng wong yai

Is the largest of all the


sets of gongs circles in
Thailand.
Khawng wong lek

Is a set of small gongs


arrange in circular frame.
Ching- Chap

Is similar to a pair of cymbals.


It is made from a thick metal
that is shaped like a tea cup.
Taphon

Is a drum similar to saphon


drum of India. The taphon is
placed on a stand and is struck
using the palms and fingers of
both hands
Ramana or Thon

is a shallow drum that looks


like a tambourine without the
metallic discs.
Jakhae or Jakhē

has a body shaped like a


crocodile. Its big and hollow
body helps resonate the
sound of the instrument
better
Saw sam sai

Is triangular in shape with


a spiked leg. Its body is
made from coconut shell
and calf-skin.
Pi or Pi nai

It is made from hardwood or


marble. The double reed pipe
of Piphat enesemble.
Khaen

Is the most important folk


instrument in northern
Thailand and Laos. It is made
up of fourteen long thin
bamboo tubes that are four
feet long.
