What is Cloud Computing ?
• It is the on demand delivery of IT services
(like services, storage, networking, apps etc.)
are retrieved from the Internet (cloud)
through web based tools and applications
(rather than direct connection to a server) to
offer faster innovation and flexible resources.
• Instead of buying, owning, and maintaining
physical data centers and servers, you can
access technology services, such as
computing power, storage, and databases, on
an as-needed basis.
Why is Cloud Computing Services used?
• Traditionally when a dedicated hardware is bought, its value depreciates with time.
(High Initial Investments – during buying and implementation , Lost Salvage Value –
at the end of hardware life)
• Also, the hardware may become technologically obsolete due to new advancements in
technologies in the future.
• Instead in Cloud Computing the hardware is owned by a vendor and one can use this
over the cloud for their uses.
• The cost of using the features over the cloud is on a “pay as you go” basis. (Amazon
Web Services has these features.)
• The cost of using cloud computing services is cheaper compared to the traditional
features since it is shared over the cloud with several other users.
Advantages of Cloud Computing
• Agility – users have the independence to re-provision a technological
infrastructure of the organization.
• Cost – “pay as you go” service (user has to pay as much as he uses like $/per
hours used) and there is no need of purchase of any heavy servers and storage
equipment.
• Device and Location Independence – since cloud infrastructure is offsite and
with just an access to the internet a user can connect from anywhere, anytime
and on any device.
• Maintenance – since the organization doesn’t have the need to install any
physical device on their location there is no need of maintenance and IT support.
• Muti-tenancy - it enables sharing of cloud resources (server, storage &
apps) among large number of users without worrying about load capacity,
efficiency and utilisations.
• Performance - good because of consistent and loosely coupled architecture.
• Security - is more secure since cloud computing follows disaster recovery,
latest operating systems, high end data storage, internet backup services,
networking services, mirrored websites, internet based clusters.
• Unlimited Computing Power and Storage – organization has the ability to
increase the memory, processing power and hardware configurations at any
point of time during usage.
Types of Cloud Services
a) Based on cloud location:
i. Public – provisioned for open use for the public by a organization who also hosts
the service.
ii. Private - used by a single organization can be hosted internally or externally.
iii. Community – shared by several organization typically hosted externally, but may
be hosted internally by one of the organizations.
iv. Hybrid – it’s a composition of two or more clouds (public, private or community)
that remain unique entities but are bounded together offering the benefits of
multiple deployment models, can be hosted internally or externally.
b) Based on the service that the cloud is
offering:
i) IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) (Cloud
Infrastructure Service)
e.g. :- Amazon Web Services (AWS), Windows
Azure, Google Compute Engine (GCE)
ii) PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) (Cloud
Platform Service)
e.g. :- Google App Engine , Windows Azure
iii) SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) (Cloud
Application Service)
e.g. :- Google Docs, Gmail
About Amazon Web Services (AWS)
• Was founded in 2002. Key People - Adam Selipsky (CEO)
• AWS is the collection of remote computing services or web services
that together make a cloud computing platform and offer various
different services like storage, large computing capacity, content
delivery, deployment, security etc. over the internet.
• It’s one of the earliest and also the most successful implementations
of Public Cloud. Functionality offered via HTTP, REST & SOAP
protocols.
• AWS offers flexibility where organization has full freedom of
selecting Operating System, Storage configurations, applications etc.
• The most common and well known AWS is EC2.
• Due to impacts of the pandemic there is shift to cloud computing services.

Why companies choose AWS ?
• Lower Costs with AWS Up-Front and Increase Savings as Usage Grows.
• 4X More Reliable & less than 1/4 the Cost of On-Premises Infrastructure’s.
• Architected for Enterprise Security Requirements.
• Increased agility.
• Enterprises cant afford to be slow in the modern world.
• Experiment Often and but fail with minor Risks.
• Options of integrating on premises resources with cloud resources available.
• Various tools to help Customers Manage Resources Across environments.
What are companies using AWS for?
• Storage, Backup and as Archives.
• Web, Mobile, and Social Apps
• Disaster Recovery
• Virtual Desktops
• Development and Test Environments
• High Performance Computing (HPC)
What is Amazon EC2?
• Also known as Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute provides resizable computing
capacity in the AWS Cloud. It allows users to rent virtual computers online on
Amazon Cloud.
• Using EC2 eliminates the need to invest in computing hardware up front, which
saves money and also allows applications to develop and deploy faster.
• EC2 allows scalable deployment of applications by providing web service through
which a user can boot an AMI (Amazon Machine Image) to create a virtual
machine, which amazon calls an “instance”.
• EC2 instance will automatically scale up to add capacity to handle the extra traffic.
It supports Elastic Load Balancing for better service.
• Amazon EC2 has Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) & Auto Scaling Capabilities
to make it easy for better performance and availability for the users applications.
Regions and Availability Zones (AZ’s)
• Amazon EC2 resources are either tied globally to a region or to a Availability
Zone.
• Each Region has multiple isolated locations known as availability zones.
• Each availability zone runs on its own physically distinct, independent
infrastructure, and is engineered to be highly reliable.
• They are physically separate, such that any disasters such as fires, tornados or
flooding would only affect a single Availability Zone.
AMI & Instances
• Amazon Machine Images is a template that contains a
software configuration for example, an operating
system, an application server, and applications. E.g.
OS, App Server and Apps.
• From an AMI, you launch an instance, which is a copy
of the AMI running as a virtual server in the cloud.
• Instances keep running until you stop, hibernate, or
terminate them, or until they fail. If an instance fails,
you can launch a new one from the AMI.
