AUDIOMETRY TEST

at
TKR Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd
on
19 May 2021
Objective
• To comply with the requirement of Occupational Safety & Health
(Noise Exposure) Regulation 2019
• To determine ‘Hearing Loss’ (HL), ‘Hearing Impairment’ (HI) and
‘Noise Induced Hearing Loss’ (NIHL)
• To suggest the frequency of audiometric testing based on the
assessment of the baseline & annual audiogram
Understanding Sound “Hz vs dB”
• Hz is unit for sound frequency (type)
• dB is unit for sound amplitude (volume/loudness)
• High dB = high volume
• High Hz = high pitch
• 40dB of 1kHz sound is louder than 30dB of 1kHz sound
• 30dB of 1kHz sound is equally loud to 30dB of 2kHz sound
• 30dB of 1kHz sound is less ‘pitch’ compared to 30dB of 2khz sound

Abnormal Hearing:
1. Hearing Loss (HL)
hearing threshold exceeding 25 dB at any frequency

Ear 0.5 kHz 1 kHz 2 kHz 3 kHz 4 kHz 6 kHz 8kHz

Right (dB) 20 30 10 10 5 5 5
Left (dB) 15 20 20 20 15 10 5

Hearing loss at right ear at 1kHz

Abnormal Hearing:
2. Hearing Impairment (HI)
average shifted of 25 dB or more at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2 & 3 kHz

Ear 0.5 kHz 1 kHz 2 kHz 3 kHz 4 kHz 6 kHz 8 kHz

Right (dB) 15 20 30 35 5 5 5
Left (dB) 15 15 30 30 15 10 5

Right ear Left ear

15 + 20 + 30 + 35 = 100 = 25dB (HI) 15 + 15 + 30 + 30 = 90 = 22.5 (Not HI, but HL)

Abnormal Hearing:
3. Standard Threshold Shift (STS)
average shift of 10 dB or more at frequencies of 2, 3 & 4 kHz compared to baseline

30 + 35 + 15 = 80 = 26.7dB 25 + 30 + 15 = 70 = 23.3dB 30 + 30 + 15 = 75 = 25.0dB 35 + 45 + 25 = 105 = 35dB

23.3dB – 26.7dB = -3.4dB (not STS) 35dB – 25dB = 10dB (STS)
Abnormal Hearing:
4. Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)
• Hearing loss arising from exposure to
noise (occupational related)
• V shape pattern at high frequency
(depth at 3 or 4 or 6 kHz and recover at
6 or 8 kHz)
