The Earth’s Magnetism

 The Earth has magnetic field

which acts as a giant bar
magnetic in its center, lined up
approximately between its
geographic north and south
poles
Magnetic meridian

 The verticle plane containing the

magnetic axis of a magnetic
suspended in the Earth’s
magnetics field
 Example: with its north pole
pointing to magnetic north
Declination
The angle between a line taken to true north
(the geographic north pole) and one taken
along the magnetic north is gradually
changing and so the declination alters slowly
with time.

Isognoal lines
 Lines joining places with equal
declination.
 There are redrawn from time to time
because of the changing of the Earth’s
magnetic field.
Inclination or dip

 The angle between a horizontal line on

the Earth surface and the direction of the
earth’s magnetic field at a point.
 It is measured using dip circle
 Isoclinal line is a line linking places with
the same inclination.
Earth Magnetism in our life
 This migrating tern may use the
Earth’s magnetic field to guide it
 People use compass to navigation in
their travel.
Earth Magnetism in our life (2)
An aurora is a natural phenomenon which is characterised
by a display of a natural-coloured (green, red, yellow or
white) light in the sky.

Aurora is sometimes referred to as ‘polar light’.

An aurora is result from the streams of electrified particles
(which are emitted by the sun) trapped in the magnetic field of
the earth. It is produced when this magnetosphere is disturbed
by the solar wind carrying the charged particles.

Only some places on the Earth you can see this phenomenon
such as Arctic or Arctantic
