Tip:
• Skim through the questions first and try to predict what kind of information
you need to listen out for.
• A question beginning 'How many..?', for example, will probably require you
to listen for a specific number or quantity of something.
Listening for gist (main ideas)

Tip
• Focus and listen out for the content words. (pick up key words, intonation,
and other clues.)
• Try to understand what is happening even if you can’t understand every
phrase or sentence.
What’s the subject of the passage?

What problem are they discussing?

What does the speaker think about the topic?

Tip
• Skim through the questions, underline the important words and decide
what kind of detail you need to identify in the listening text.
Inferring Meaning

Tip
• Whenever you’re listening to a conversation/ audio clip/ etc … and you
don’t understand a word, try to guess its meaning by the context and the
main topic.

Listening section
The Listening section has 3 parts:
• Part 1. Four short conversations, each followed by 1 question.
• Part 2. One longer conversation, followed by 4 questions.
• Part 3. One lecture, followed by 6 questions.
You will hear each conversation or lecture only one time.
However, you may take notes while listening and use your notes
when answering the questions. You must answer each question
before counting.
To continue to the next question, click the “Next” button. In this
section, you cannot use “Back” button to return to an earlier
question.
The number of questions and the amount of time you have to
answer the questions will be shown separately for each section in
the “Question – Time Left” window on your screen. Time is not
counted while you are listening to the conversation or lecture.
You should use Active Listening. It involves:

· Guessing what will come next

· asking questions

Active · making educated guesses

Listening
· creating a mental picture

· paying attention to tone of voice, inflection, pauses, and

· taking notes (especially in Parts 2 and 3).


HOW TO ADDRESS PART ONE?
These short conversations will assess your ability to understand the speaker’s
meaning. There will be two speakers, typically a man and a woman. Because these
conversations are so short, there is probably no need to take notes.

Most importantly, you should use active listening to listen closely and carefully.
