Introduction Brown seaweeds (known also as macroalgae) are
abundant in many coastlines and in some of them they
represent an almost unexploited but very valuable
marine resource.
Alginates are salts of long-chain Alginic acids, which in brown seaweeds are present mainly as the calcium
salt of alginic acid, although magnesium, potassium and sodium salts are also present.

Generation of
alginate fibres:
Morphology of
alginate fibres:
SEM micrographs of the calcium alginate fibres were obtained. The surface of the calcium alginate fibre
had a similar appearance to ordinary fibres, and there were grooves in the fibres surface. The fibre
microscopic appearance is mainly decided by the coagulation conditions such as coagulation
concentration, coagulation temperature, coagulation time
Thermal Property:
The thermal analysis of calcium alginate fibres was carried out by means of differential scanning
calorimetry. The derivative of the calcium alginate fibres was shown in Fig. There were two sharp
apices near 233℃ and 260℃. This could be attributed to the breakage and the skeleton decomposition
of alginate fibres. The TG/DTG curves for the calcium alginate fibres also present in Fig. The initial
weight changed between 40°C and 150°C.

Alginate Uses in Industry :
Alginates are one of the compounds of brown seaweeds, which characterise of favourable properties.
There are known many methods to obtain these natural polysaccharides from algae, but quantity and
quality of achieved yield depend on many aspects. . These natural polysaccharides are widely applied in
everyday life sectors such as food and beverage industry, textile manufacturing, pharmaceutical industry,
also in bioengineering technology. Land resources are currently being exhausted, the investigation and
utilization of ocean-based alginate fibres are of great significance. However, the varieties and properties
of alginate fibres are still not sufficient to meet the needs of different applications. We need to do more
research to make these thing a valuable source of weath for mankind and these world.
