ABOUT “RAINCOAT”

“Raincoat” was written by Akhteruzzaman Elias. It was published in 1995. It is based on the
situation in Dhaka during the war of liberation.
SUMMARY

• That was the last stage of liberation war. At that time guerrilla attack of the freedom fighters
started in Dhaka. One of the incidents is the subject of this story. The power transformer has
been destroyed as a result of the attack in front of Dhaka collage. After the attack the Pakistani
army subdued the collage teachers and arrested Nurul Huda and Abdus Sattar Mridha. They
tried to find the freedom fighters by torturing them. Nurul Huda was a professor in the collage.
He was not very brave. He always looked tensed because of things going around him. He was
also worried because of his brother-in-law Mintu, who joined the freedom fighters. In Nurul
Huda’s statement most of the events of the story have been narrated.
• After the night of the guerrilla attack, it was raining the next day. When the Pakistani army
called for Nurul Huda, he had to go to the collage in this rain. He was very tensed about what
the Pakistani army would do to him. The raincoat that he had to wear to go to the collage was
his brother-in-law freedom fighter Mintu’s. The symbolic significance of this raincoat in the
story is remarkable. By wearing the raincoat of a freedom fighter, Nurul Huda is filled with
courage and patriotism. The Pakistani army tortured him for the address of the freedom fighters
but they didn’t get anything.
HOW IT HELPS TO UNDERSTAND 1971

• In the great liberation war of 1971, every moment of public life was a prisoner of disbelief and
terror. There were terrifying situation everywhere. Pakistani army tortured and killed us. Later the
Bengalis organized and put up a strong resistance against the Pakistani forces. The tortures couldn’t
keep them down. They bravely jumped into the war and snatched the freedom.
• The story raincoat told us about the self sacrifices of Bengalis. The narrative depicts the life of
Dhaka city in the midst of the brutal violence and massacre of Pakistani forces. In the story we saw
the life of a collage teacher during the time of liberation war. It shows us how a simple collage
teacher was brutally tortured by the Pakistanis. But Nurul Huda was not afraid of being tortured. He
showed courage and acted bravely. From this story we saw the sacrifice of Nurul Huda for the
freedom. Many of other sacrifices like this brings us the victory in the liberation war of 1971.
