SERVER HANDLING

MADE BY EDEM AND APEK

WHAT IS A SERVER?

 What is a server and what does it do?

 A server stores, sends, and receives data. In essence, it "serves" something else and exists to provide services. A
computer, software program, or even a storage device may act as a server, and it may provide one service or
several.
THE MAIN REASONS REGARDING PROPER SERVER MANAGEMENT
- Most IT functions depend on the health and infrastructure of servers, making proper server management
an essential task for data center administrators. Server management is a complex process, especially with
the growth of cloud computing. System administrators must be able to continuously manage physical
server hardware, virtual machines and a variety of application and database servers simultaneously.
HOW TO EFFICIENTLY WORK AND HANDLE SERVERS
PROFESSIONALLY?
 There is no one way to lift and move a server. Sure some ways may be more effective, safer,
and more efficient, but that doesn’t mean that they’re used. In fact it is completely normal for
a data center to expect one or two of their IT techs to lift and move around hundreds of
pounds of equipment on a regular basis. Now try to imagine all of horrible scenarios that can
occur when two people, who aren’t professional movers or body builders, attempt to
lift a server… All of those terrible things that you just thought in your head have and will
occur… Drinks spill and take out entire facilities, fork lifts drop millions of dollars’ worth of
equipment, techs use spinning office chairs to try and reach servers on the top of racks and
such
TAKING PHYSICAL CARE OF A SERVER

 Temperature
 Temperature is the foremost environmental threat to computer equipment. Countless amounts of servers become
damaged due to improper thermal management. The air around your servers needs to be maintained in the range of
68° to 72° F (20° to 24°C) for optimal reliability.
 Humidity
 In a computer room or data center, relative humidity (RH) levels should be between 45% and 55%. If RH levels
become too high, water condensation will cause corrosion, rust, and short-circuiting within the equipment.
PHYSICAL CARE

 Vibration
 Vibrations are a hazard that can dislodge components that are critical to your system.
 Poor Cable Management
 A lot of equipment in a rack means a lot of cables.
