HOW POVERTY AFFECTS EDUCATION
●The poverty of our children has been a continuing concern. Most parents in slums
don’t understand the importance of education and are reluctant to send their children
to school.
●Some parents don’t have sufficient finances to educate their children, even if they do
send their kids to government schools, and the quality of education is not as good
and children who attend these schools end up doing menial jobs.
●Low-income families are less likely to be able to afford proper nutrition and
sometimes lack day-to-day necessities at home. With little financial education and
low-earnings,these families might have to send their children to school without
breakfast or lunch.
●Poverty in India has increased to such an extent that these children are stuck in a
vicious cycle, even if they do finish their primary education, they later drop out of
school and start doing lowly jobs which again leads to poverty.Poverty affects their
learning process, and most students born into poverty live in a bad environment.
SOCIAL NEGLECTS
● The most common form of neglect is the social neglect .
One of the social neglect is the negligence of poverty by the
country’s government.
● The children in this case are the most affected .They grow
up in an environment where they immediately have to be
submitted to lifelong sufferings.
● The chapter ‘Lost Spring’ and the poem ‘An elementary
School Classroom in a Slum’ talks about children who have
lots of wishes and dreams but eventually have to follow
their fate which shows no signs of betterment .
● Everyone talks social negligence, instead everyone should
take up responsibility to help such needy areas .Instead of
neglecting we can protect the future of our nation.
AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM IN A SLUM
This poem written by Stephen Sphender describes the social
inequalities which are prevailing in the society. In the poem , he
describes the condition of the students of an elementary school
situated in slum area.
Through this poem the poet describes how the children of this
school are depressed due to extreme poverty. He says that faces of
children are dull and without any energy. This are in contrast with
other kids of their age who are full of energy due to their healthy
life. Here the children are untidy and haven’t combed hair. He
describes some children which are so unhealthy and disabled due
to malnourishment . At the end of the dim room there seems one
boy with bright eyes dreaming of a lively , poverty free life.
AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASSROOM IN A SLUM
Then the poet describes about the walls of the school. They look
creamy in colour like the colour of sour cream , because they
aren’t painted for years. The walls are covered with various
charts and images that have been donated by different people ,
like pictures of Shakespeare , Tyrolese valley and a map. Here the
map of the world irrelevant because the slum in which they live
completely different from the original world . Their world is only
what they see out of the window of the classroom - The Slum.
He further says that government should take necessary steps to
overcome the problems faced by these kids. He wants the
children make their dreams true . This will result in their progress
and they will be able to paint a bright future for themselves.
LOST SPRING
The story, “Lost Spring” deals with the deplorable condition of
poor children who get forced to miss the simple joyful moments
of childhood because of their socio-economic conditions. These
children are not given the opportunity of schooling and are
compelled to start working early in life.
India’s children suffer the most due to the poverty crisis that continues to affect
thousands of small towns and villages. Their future is often compromised due to the
lack of basic facilities and infrastructure for education and development. Reputed
NGOs has been implementing long-term programs for thousands of Indian children, to
help them have a better future.
Therefore make a donation today and do your bit for the society. This will not only
help the country as a whole, but will also give you a lot of happiness and satisfaction.
