SINGLE AND DOUBLE

LOADED CORRIOR
GROUP-10

ID:
180201062
180201041
Characteristics of Single Loaded Corridor:
• Normally used in low rise
• buildings Grid comes from its working space and structural needs
• Rooms are located at the one side of the corridor to get natural light and ventilation
• The staircase may be located at one or both end or at the center of the building
• The maximum distance from one staircase to another should be within 100‘
• Construction system usually load bearing or columns
• The bays are restricted to 20' to control the depth of the beams and floor to floor height
•The width of the corridor depends on the traffic load
• In a linear building the expansion joint should be neary 150'

Double Loaded Corridor Type Building :

A building design in which there are apartments or other individual
units on both sides of a passage corridor .

• Mostly suitable for high rise buildings

• Column spacing usually 24’ to accommodate 3 car at a time at basement
parking.
• Rooms are located at the both side of the corridor.
• Columns and shear wall construction are for high rise building.
• Entry to the building can be placed either

o At the one side of the building

o At the center or
o At the intersection of forms

General width of double load corridor:

While not initially recognizable by name, the double-
loaded corridor is spatially ubiquitous. Uniformly 5
feet wide with two rows of 26-30 foot deep
Double loaded dwellings flanking each side, these arrangements
corridor
maintain a uniform height, material, and direction.
Ventilation in a double loaded corridor:
• the double loaded corridor is that it does not lend it self to cross
ventilation.
• If each unit would be a rectangle, two opposing walls are party
walls and two opposing walls are the corridor and the exterior.
• In this situation the corner units are the most sought after as they
will have two exterior walls allowing for better light and natural
ventilation.
• Undulating extrusions from the corridor have helped to alleviate this
stagnant condition of course this results in an increase in cost.

• Wind enters with a lower velocity by the

windows
• Leaves the room with a higher velocity by narrow
space.

Double-loaded corridor access:
The double-loaded arrangement locates the corridor within the building. Apartments
are accessed off both sides of the corridor .Corner and multi-level apartments are
generally double aspect and require corridors on alternate levels.  The overall
building depth is deeper than a single-loaded arrangement and solutions for a dual-
fronted building will be required.

It is better to limit the number of apartments off one double loaded corridor.
Other things to consider include:
•windows at the end of the corridor to let in light and air, and allow views out
•extra space around lifts and circulation areas, to form lobbies where people can
meet
•extra width and height in the corridor, particularly around doorways, to give a
feeling of spaciousness
•using an atrium in a building with a deep plan. This can let in light to the middle
of the building.

T here is the potential to resolve solar access for otherwise unfavourably faced
units on a single or double-loaded corridor by way of using double height,
sometimes referred to as "up-and-over", apartments.
These will effectively be a two level apartment, and the living level will have
windows on both sides.

Conclusion:
• When more than two units are served by one such core, the use of sun and wind in
space conditioning becomes difficult
• although the ratio of exposed envelope to floor area per unit becomes smaller.
• Double loaded corridor buildings can’t provide cross ventilation.
• Double loaded corridor buildings will almost always suffer from poor solar access

The double-loaded arrangement locates the corridor within the building. Apartments

are accessed off both sides of the corridor and are therefore predominantly single
aspect. Corner and multi-level apartments are generally double aspect and require
corridors on alternate levels.
