The largest organ in the human body is the skin. One of the skin's
functions is to help regulate the amount of body heat that flows in and
out of the body. Heavy smoking ages skin very quickly. When it is cold,
we cover the skin with extra layers of clothing to slow down the
outward flow of heat. When it is hot, evaporation of sweat cools us
down.

withdraw his hand, he burst into tears and bitterly lamented
his disappointment.

The Fox and the Crow

A Crow, having stolen a bit of meat, perched in a tree and held it in her beak. A
Fox, seeing this, longed to possess the meat himself, and by a wily stratagem
succeeded. "How handsome is the Crow," he exclaimed, in the beauty of her
shape and in the fairness of her complexion! Oh, if her voice were only equal
to her beauty, she would deservedly be considered the Queen of Birds!" This
he said deceitfully; but the Crow, anxious to refute the reflection cast upon her
voice, set up a loud caw and dropped the flesh. The Fox quickly picked it up,
and thus addressed the Crow: "My good Crow, your voice is right enough, but
your wit is wanting."

Theme(=Big lesson): Be wary of flatterers. .

topic: TABLE MANNERS.

In Argentina, it is bad manners to clear your throat or blow your nose

at the table. In Brazil, avoid touching your food with your fingers, and
be sure to wipe your mouth before taking a drink. When dining with
Muslim companions, be careful not to use your left hand for eating,
touching others, giving or receiving objects, or pointing.
IMPLIED MAIN IDEA: Different cultures have different
table manners and require different responses by guests.
topic: TV VIOLENCE
Does watching violence on TV make people more prone to violence themselves?
Obviously, TV violence has some negative effects. One study found that heavy TV
watchers are more fearful of others. They try to protect themselves with guns, alarm
systems, and security locks on doors. In the same study it was found that heavy TV
watchers are less upset about real-life violence than are non-TV watchers. All of the
violence they see on TV makes them less sensitive to the real thing. A recent study also
found that TV violence increases aggressive behavior in kids and makes them more likely
to select toy guns rather than other kinds of toys.

IMPLIED MAIN IDEA: TV violence can have

harmful results.
topic: CONTRADICTORY SAYINGS

We’re often told “He who hesitates is lost,” but we’re also warned to
“look before you leap.” Most of us have heard the saying, “Out of sight,
out of mind,” but then we hear “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
Everyone talks about “love at first sight.” But then someone reminds us,
“Marry in haste, repent at leisure.” It’s all very confusing.

IMPLIED MAIN IDEA: There are many

sayings in our culture that contradict one another / are
very confusing.
topic: STRESS MANAGMENT
One technique to manage stress is self-hypnosis. Another relaxation technique is the
“relaxation response.” In this technique, one learns how to quiet the body and mind.
Still another way to manage stress is progressive muscular relaxation. This is a
procedure in which muscles are contracted and relaxed systematically. Other
techniques include yoga, quieting, and diaphragmatic breathing.

IMPLIED MAIN IDEA: There are many ways

to manage stress.
