WHAT IS INTERNET?
• It is usually defined as
Information Superhighway
because you can find almost all
information you need through it.
• It is also a computer network
made up of thousands of
network world wide.

TRUTHS ABOUT INTERNET
• No governing body is in control of the Internet.
• No one knows exactly how many computers are
connected to the Internet, although estimates
are ongoing.
• It works on client/server architecture.
• All computers on the Internet uses TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol) to communicate.

1986 The National Science Foundation (NSF)
began the NSFNET, a backbone that
connected the nation’s five
supercomputer centers at high speed.
NSF upgraded the network repeatedly,
setting the blistering pace for
commercial entities.

1994 The NSFNET was carrying 10 trillion
bytes of Internet traffic per month.

INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY
• Every piece of information stored in the
Internet has a unique address known as URL
or Uniform Resource Locator.
• While a lot of information is freely available, it
is also be viewed by commodity and some
information on the Internet is only available
by subscription.
KEEPING IN TOUCH
• Internet services like Newsgroups, chat and
video conferencing and E-mail provides the
Internet communication services.
• 2 Types of Computer Network
1. LAN (Local Area Network). A computer network
that spans a relatively small area like single building or
group of buildings.
2. WAN (Wide Area Network). A computer network in
which computers are connected to each other in long
distance using telephone lines and satellite connections.

• The World Wide Web (WWW or W3) consists of files
called pages or web pages, containing information
or links to resources throughout the Internet.
Chat and Video Conferencing
• Chat is to exchange messages in real time
while a video conference is a set of
interactive telecommunication
technologies which allow two or more
locations to interact via two-way video and
audio transmissions simultaneously with
other computer users

News Groups
• A UseNet newsgroup is a repository
usually within the Usenet system, for
messages posted from many users in
different locations. The term may be
confusing to some, because it is usually
a discussion group. Newsgroups are
technically distinct from, but
functionally similar to, discussion
forums on the World Wide Web.
Newsreader software is used to read
newsgroups.

File Transfer Protocols

• FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. As
the name suggests, FTP is used to transfer files
between computers on a network.
Search Engines
• Search engines are software that make
it possible to look for and retrieve
material on the Internet. Popular
search engines are Alta Vista, Google,
Lycos and Yahoo.
