> Kinship- the “web of social relationships”,
humans form as part of a family, which is the
smallest unit of society. It is the relation between
two or more persons that is based on common
ancestry or marriage. Marriage- special contract
of permanent union between a man and a woman
entered into in accordance with law for the
establishment of conjugal and family life.
Household- consists of one or more people who
live in the same dwelling and also share at meals
or living accommodation, and may consist of a
single family or some other grouping of people.

> Kinship by Blood- links individuals based
on their genetic relations. It allows an
individual to identify another
> individual as a family member through
blood relation. It is also known as kinship
by consanguinity. (Examples:
> Parents and their children and between
children of same parents.)
Classification of family according to Blood
Line
> a. Patrilineal – family that traces its
ancestry from the paternal or father’s side.
> b. Matrilineal - family that traces its
ancestry from the maternal or mother’s side.
> c. Bilineal–family that traces its ancestry
from both paternal and maternal side.

> Kinship by Marriage- When a person
marries, he establishes relationship not only
with the girl whom he marries but also with
a number of other people in the girl’s
family. Moreover, it is not only the person
marrying who gets bound to the family
members of the girl but his family members
also get bound to the family members of the
girl.

Form of Marriage
> a. Monogamy – Marriage in which there is only
one wife and one husband at a time.
> b. Polygamy – Any form of marriage in which a
person may have more than one spouse at a time.
> 1. Polyandry– A form of marriage in which one
woman may have more than one husband at a time.
> 2. Polygyny – A form of marriage in which a man
may have more than one wife at a time.
> 3. Group Marriage - wherein the family unit
consists of multiple husbands and multiple wives

> Kinship by Ritual is also known as
Compadrazgo (literally co-fatherhood)- the
form of ritual kinship established through
rites (especially at baptism, confirmation
and marriage) between a person, his or her
biological parents, and his or her
godparents.
> Parents and godparents usually call each
other com-padre or comadre depending on
gender. Politics of Kinship- kinship does
not only create social ties among
individuals. In some cases, politics and
kinship are related allowing for the creation
of political alliances and dynasties. A
political refers to the continuous rule of one
family. This can be in the form of the
succession of rule or in the occupancy of
several political positions by one family.

> Family- the basic social institution that makes
possible the growth of society, because individuals
are born out of a family. They are related by blood;
marriage; or adoption who share the primary
responsibility for reproduction and caring for
members.
> Householder- one person in each household is
designated as the householder In most cases, the
householder is the person, or one of the people, in
whose name the home is owned, being bought, or
rented. If there is no such person in the household,
any adult household member 11 15 years old and over
Classifications of Family According to:
> 1. Organization
> a. Conjugal Family- Consist of a husband and a
wife.
> b. Nuclear Family – Consist of husband, wife and
their dependent children.
> c. Extended Family- Consist of two or more nuclear
family related to each other economically and
> socially.
> d. Polygamous Family - is a marriage which
includes more than 1 partner.

> 2. Residence Pattern
> a. Neolocal – the married couple resides in
a new place.
> b. Patrilocal- the married couple resides
with or near the parents of the husband.
> c. Matrilocal- the married couple resides
with or near the parents of the wife.
> d. Bilocal- the married couple resides
alternately with either of their parents.

> 3. Authority
> a. Patriarchal –authority is solely exercised
by the father/oldest male.
> b. Matriarchal – the members live together
under the authority of the mother/oldest
female.
> c. Egalitarian – Spouses jointly share in
decision- making, control of family
resources and child- rearing.

> Two types of Household
> 1. Family household- living with one or more
individuals related to him or her by birth,
marriage, or adoption. The householder and all
of the people in the household related to him or
her are family members. (Examples: Married
Couples, Relatives, Children, Siblings)
> 2. Nonfamily household- living alone or with
nonrelatives only. Nonrelatives include any
household member not related to the
householder by birth, marriage, or adoption,
including foster children.(Examples:
