Debye-Huckel Limiting LAW

• In Infinitely Dilute solutions the activity coefficients of strong

electrolytes are unity but in concentrated solutions the value of activity
coefficients does not remain unity
• Deviation from ideal behavior increase with the increase in strength of
solution

 Debye Hackel Proposed proposed a theory of for deviation of activity coefficients from
unity. This Theory is known as Debye Huckel theory of dilute ionic solutions or Debye
Huckel theory of activity coefficients

 According to This Theory

 Inter ionic Forces exist between the ions of Strong Electrolyte

 There is an ionic atmosphere surrounding an ion.

 The ionic Atmosphere carries a net charge opposite to that of ions

 Only at infinite dilution, the inter-ionic forces are negligible and activity Co-efficent would
be unity
