• Carry A pocket diary on field - be ready to capture anything
you find interesting or important.
• Observe & note–
• Methodologies
• Various components
• Various dependencies
• Progress, time cycle, resource utilization, cost
performance
• Machineries- capacity, working, productivity
• Note down things that you want to research later
Ask Questions

• When you are lacking experience, it’s easy to


overestimate how well you’ve actually
understood the things
• Learn from people, their previous experiences.
• Remember that you can learn something from
everyone
• Get to know people– your colleagues, your
teams, your wider department, your clients and
your firm and get involved wherever possible.
• Remember that the more important you make
people feel, the more they will respond to you.
Developing Commercial Awareness
• Understand how the organization
operates and makes profit
• Understand resources and
suppliers
• Thinking in terms of commercial
terms-
a) Input cost of resources,
b) Consumption cost of
resources,
c) Review of indirect cost,
d) Control of wasteful
expenses
Do not sign, unless you know what you are
signing
• This habit will allow you to learn each and
every term in the new format
• Understand importance of reading before
signing
• Every format has it’s own importance, know
why it is important
• Only when you understand the importance,
you will act on it- This improves
workmanship.
• Review all, attention to detail is important.
Continuous Technical Learning
• We tend to overlook technical knowledge as
we embark on a management journey-
understand importance of technical
information
• Technical knowledge helps
• It’s harder for team members to fool you
• Technical expertise = more credible
• Continues learning is your self-motivated
persistence in acquiring knowledge and
competencies in order to expand your skill
• It will help you-
• Remain relevant
• Competence leads to confidence
• Sparks new ideas
