GE HIST 101
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course analyzes Philippine history from multiple perspectives
through the lens of selected primary sources coming from the various
disciplines and of different genres. Students are given opportunities to
analyze the author’s background and main arguments, compare different
points of view, identify biases and examine the evidences presented in the
document. The discussions will tackle traditional topics in history and other
interdisciplinary themes that will deepen and broaden their understanding of
Philippine political, economic, cultural, social, scientific, and religious
history. Priority is given to primary materials that could help students
develop their analytical and communication skills. The end goal is to
develop the historical and critical consciousness of the students so that
they will become versatile, articulate, broad-minded, morally upright
and responsible citizens.

effects reverberate even to an
unspecified future time-space
continuum.

MODULE 1: History and

Historiography: Meaning and
Relevance
GE HIST 101

LESSON 1: Meaning and

Importance of History

OBJECTIVES:

Apply theoretical and methodological

tools in the study of history.

GE HIST 101

Meaning
of History

Socrates in his dialectic argued the

importance of coming up with terms
before engaging in a discourse.

In this way, there will be common

ground for the exchange of
discussion.
GE HIST 101 Meaning
of
History

 On the other hand, the appropriation of meaning is

complicated for it has to consider several factors.

Historical and Cultural.

The power that emanates from the

one who controls the discourse is
also a factor.

 To quote Napoleon Bonaparte “what is history

but a fable agreed upon.”
GE HIST 101

Meaning
of History

Gottschalk (1969) posited that the

term history has evolved from its
present connotation.

Etymologically, history was taken from

the Greek word iotopia which means “to
learn”. At present the terms connote the
past events.
GE HIST 101

Meaning
of History

Generally, history is concerned with

the study of the human past
(Barnes, 1963).

First, it deals with the past events;

second, the records of past events such
as, chronicle, annals, and official records
like birth certificates, marriage
certificates; third, history as an academic
discipline (Shaffer, 1974).
GE HIST 101
Meaning
of
History

The term history although it means past,

cannot be narrowed down to the records of
past events only.

Likewise, even though the subject of history

is past events, nobody can deny that it
connotes many implications that affect the life
of the people and the future of a country.
GE HIST 101 Meaning
of History

As defined by Medina, history is not just

the past but also and principally the present
and future. History is a forward projection.
It is a social construction of a future reality.

History as a discourse is a series of tactics of

organizing and sequencing events and past
systems according to individual outlook,
interest, objective or goals.
GE HIST 101 A prominent historian, Samuel Tan

development are interrelated,

His definition gives us a clue that

history is the achievement of different
people in a particular time and not just
the work of a particular group of
people in a particular place, thus
debunking the Manila-centered history.
