OPERATIONS
INTRODUCTION:
 

Directorate of Railway Operations stand as one of the directorate that constitute


Tanzania Railway Corporation. The Directorate is under the office of Director of
Railway Operations.
The Directorate is responsible for efficient and profitable carriage of passengers,
freight, collection and remittance of such revenue.
The directorate is made up of three section at Headquarters level namely
-Logistics and Fleet Management ,
-Customer Services and
-Traffic Control ,headed by Managers
INTRODUCTION

Similarly the Directorate is made up of four operational


districts, namely DSM, TBR, MZA and TAN.

RESOURCES OF OPEARATION DIRECTORATE:

Resources used by the Directorate to fulfil its daily duties:


• Rolling stock (locomotives & wagons)
• Railtrack (path for trains)
• Signalling ( train signalling at station, yard and section)
• Stations (station yards, sidings)
• Skilled staff ( Transportation officers, train controllers ,station masters, guards
and Yard staff)
• Train control offices (working timetable)
• Traffic operations rules and regulations (general rule and General appendix for
General rule, train control procedure, etc.)
PASSENGER TRAIN:
TRAIN OPERATIONS:

Train operations is the whole process including activities done to prepare and move
the train from the original station to the destination station.
• Freight train operation (shunting activities, marshaling, loading & offloading)
• Passenger train operation (marshaling)
• Train control operations ( Planning, implementing, monitoring and Management)
• Station operations ( Authority to proceed, crossing, stabling, revenue collection,
customer service)
• Customer service operations (passenger train attendants, quality of services to
customer)
• Inspection operations (Monthly and quarterly inspection for Traffic inspectors,
officers, managers and Director to ensure the compliance of operation Rules and
Regulations)
GOODS/FREIGHT TRAIN:
TRAINS OPERATION PERFORMANCE

For the Directorate to achieve its targets at the level of Directorate, Corporation
( strategic plan), there some targets and performance imposed .
• Train punctuality (operational speed and transit time)
• Wagon turnround (time for loading to loading)
• Utilization ( rolling stock, track capacity)
• Number of commercial (passenger, goods, mixed and pickup trains and other
(relief, engineering, light, and ferries train) run
