TABLE OF CONTENTS 2
Retailing refers to all activities involved in the
selling/ buying of merchandise or goods to the
customers in relatively small quantities for use or
consumption.

ABOUT ME 3
There are two ways of understanding retailing.

• One is that it is the selling of goods or merchandise by the retailers to the consumers
with the intention of gaining profit. The retailers buy the merchandise from any of the
following: planters, manufacturers, wholesalers, or middlemen. Then, they resell this
merchandise to the end users-you, your family, friends, and others. Retailers are owners of
sari- sari stores, grocery stores, supermarkets, and wet and dry markets.

• The second is that, it is the purchasing of goods or merchandise by the consumers

from the retailers with the intention of satisfying their own needs and wants or those of
their families or friends

Retailing, therefore, is the marketing transaction between a retailer and seller or the
purchaser or consumer. Each party has his/her own purpose in entering into such
transaction.

VALUES 4
Importance of
Retailing
1. It gives service to the people in a barrio, town, or city by
selling goods needed immediately by the consumer, depending
on one’s available means. For instance, one can buy half a kilo
or rice, two eggs, and ₱5.00 of oil in a retail store just in time for
breakfast.

2. It helps in the distribution of goods in different

communities from the producers or manufacturers (where the
goods come from) to consumers.

WHAT I DO 5
3. It provides job opportunities for people from different
walks of life. Retailing is a business for those who wish to
put up their own retail store—whether he/she is employed or
unemployed, young or old, male or female. Then if the said
business does well, the retailer may hire helpers to assist
him/her in his/her store.
4. It contributes to national progress. A nation is
progressive when its people have steady income to support
themselves and their families.

BUYING OF How can one make a sound
MERCHANDI and wise buy? Here are some
SE guidelines:

PROJECT MERCURY 7
1. Know the law of supply and demand- this law states that: When the demand
is great and the supply is little, the cost of commodities tends to go up. When the
demand is little and the supply is great, the cost of commodities tends to go down.
For instance, the best time to buy fruits and vegetables is when they are in season.
At this time, there is usually a greater supply than demand, so they are at the
lowest price.
2. Know where to buy- different markets have different prices for the same
commodity. Buying where it is most convenient and cheaper for you is a best
guide. In addition, buy from reliable sources. Permanent stores usually are more
reliable than temporary ones.
3. Know the right quality- the right quality is not necessarily confined to the
best quality, but rather it is quality fitted for a specific purpose. Choose materials
or resources that are appropriate for the intended purpose.
4. Know the right quantity- buying the right amount for a specific purpose saves
money than buying more than what is needed. However, merchandise that can be
stored for a longer period can be bought in big quantities.

in kilos, grams, yards, meters, pieces, dozens, hundreds, packs, cartons, boxes, cans,
and bottles. When buying by weight, find out if the weighing scale on which the
goods you are purchasing are measured is calibrated or marked with standard scale of
reading. When buying by length, have the sellers/ vendors measure the goods using a
meter stick or other measuring instrument rather than allow him/her to measure them
using his/her arm span or reach just to approximate.
6. Develop the habit of reading labels on canned goods in groceries and
supermarkets- labels are usually found on canned and bottled goods as well as other
packed products. They provide the needed information about the product—the brand
name, net weight, nutrition facts, ingredients, name/place of manufactures,
manufacturing and expiration dates, directions for use, etc.
7. Know the right price- this can be done by comparing it with the standard prices
—the price set for an item either by the government or the current price in most
stores. The government enforces price control on some items which sellers must
follow.

1. Public Markets- there are two types of market in
accordance to merchandise sold: the wet and dry, wet
markets sell fish, meat, poultry, and vegetables. Dry
markets sell textile, clothes, school supplies,
kitchenware, home accessories, and other related
items. An open market also has these two sections.
Every town has its own market that is situated usually
at the center of the place, the busiest and most
accessible, or where people usually crowd.

2. Grocery Stores- these are bigger stores than sari-
sari stores. They are usually found in crowded or
conspicuous areas. These stores are more convenient
especially to those who want to avoid the hustle and

3. Supermarkets- these are bigger than grocery stores.
They employ self- service. The customer picks his/her
own choices or merchandise, places them in a cart, and
then pays to the cashier. Supermarkets sell almost all
brands of merchandise—both local and imported.

15
16
4. Specialty Stores- these are single- line stores.
They carry specialized type of merchandise and
other related items of different brands and makes.
Examples are shoe stores, bookstores, hardware
stores, pharmacies, and others.

6. One-stop Shops- the newest shopping centers
today cater to all needs of the family. The one-stop
is a one-market concept where you can purchase
any item you need or want.

21
22
7. Factory Outlets- today, there are manufacturers
that have opened their own outlets besides their
factory and, sometimes, in other strategic places. This
type of place allows the customer to buy goods in
retail yet a factory price. Most factory outlets cater to
wholesalers and retailers.

23
24
8. Farms or Producers- there are farms today that
sell directly to retailers besides doing contract selling.
Retailers, who go direct to the source of the goods,
have better chances of buying the goods at the lowest
price possible, thus, being able to sell it at a more
profitable price.
