Unit 2.

2-Tighter British Control Leads to

Greater Colonial Resistance
(DisCh3.2)

EQ: What events caused colonists to consider going to war with

England for their independence? (Use details!)
Q1: Cost of Victory
• F&I War paid for with borrowed money, British now
responsible for repaying large debt while also
governing & protecting colonies

• British began tightening control over colonies to

preserve profits

• Feeling colonists should pay fair share of debt and

protection costs, Parliament passed series of tax laws
starting in 1764

• 1765 - Quartering Act = Made colonists’ house British

troops and provide them food, weapons, and supplies

Q2: Sugar and Stamp Acts

• 1764: Sugar Act – actually lowered tax on items

like molasses and sugar, but improved British
ability to collect the tax (original tax usually not
collected, so this felt like new expense)

• 1765: Stamp Act – Required many written or

printed items (newspapers, legal documents,
playing cards, etc) to be on special paper
stamped in Great Britain which was taxed

Q3: No Taxation Without Representation
• American colonists had grown accustomed to life without
interference from British

• Had always avoided taxes by bribing tax collectors and

smuggling in goods

• Now British enforcing new tax laws and taxing everyday items

• For years colonists had elected representatives to make laws for

them in colonial legislatures – now Parliament passing laws
affecting them, but colonists not allowed to have
representatives in British Parliament

• “No taxation without representation” became rallying cry

against British attempts to tax them

Taxing Authority

HERE
NOTE: The colonists did not want to be represented in Parliament,
where their representatives could have been outnumbered.
They believed that only their representatives in their own
colonial legislatures could legitimately tax them.

FYI: Important Terms
• Understand not everyone agreed on what colonial interests really were

• Some colonists vowed to keep their allegiance to the British throne,

these people were called LOYALISTS (Loyal to King George III), they
made up about 20% of the population at this point

• Others were neutral and took no side (at this point the largest group,
50-60%)

• Colonists who were upset about British rule and control were known
as PATRIOTS (They thought of themselves as American – not British
and only made up about 20-30% of the population at this point)

• British Troops were often referred to by patriots as Redcoats or

Lobster-Backs due to their uniform containing a red coat

Q4: Colonists Respond
• 1765 - Stamp Act Congress = 9 of 13 colonies gather
(first meeting of elected representatives from Just because we don’t tax...
across colonies), demand repeal of Stamp Act and doesn’t mean that we can’t!
state Parliament lacked authority to tax colonies in
the document, Declaration of Rights and Grievances

• Colonists form secret societies (such as Sons of

Liberty led by Samuel Adams in Boston) which
organized protests, boycotts, and publicized
concerns

• Protests succeed, sales of British goods fall,

Parliament repealed Stamp Act but passed
Declaratory Act in 1766 stating Parliament could
still tax them

Q7: The Boston Tea Party
• Many British taxes had been repealed (ended) because
American boycotts hurt British economy

• Parliament tries again and passes Tea Act in 1773

• Act actually makes tea cheaper but gives English control of all
trade of tea

• Throughout colonies colonists respond with protests

• Sons of Liberty in Boston dump British tea that had

arrived by ship into the harbor while dressed as
Indians (symbolizing American roots, not British)

• Event known as the Boston Tea Party
