sentence analysis that was first mentioned by
Leonard Bloomfield and developed further by
Rulon Wells

• Grouping words and phrases in sentences in order to clear
the meaning is called IC analysis.

Let’s take an example:

Three outstanding children’s physician.

An Ambiguous Sentence
• Three outstanding children’s physician.

1- Physician for three outstanding children

• Three outstanding children’s physician.

2- Three outstanding physician for children.

• Three outstanding children’s physician.

3- Three physician for outstanding children

Two ways of Labeling
• Categorical Labeling
• Functional Labeling
What is Categorical labeling???
• When we Label IC cuts in terms of physical
properties of the words:

• Noun Phase
• Verb Phrase
• Prepositional Phrase
Functional labeling???
• When we Label IC cuts in terms of grammatical function,
we call it functional labeling.
Five Construction type
• 1 the structure of predication (Sub+Pre)
• 2 the structure of Modification (Mod+head)
• 3 the structure of complementation (Verbl+Comp)
• 4 the structure of subordination (Subordinator+dependent
unit)
• 5 the structure of coordination (Independent
Unit+Coordination)
IC Analysis fails:
• It is just a technique not a theory.
• It gives hundreds of descriptions for hundred sentences.
• It does not help to describe all the structures:
• It fails in interrogative sentences for example:

• Are you coming?

(difficult to decide where to do IC cuts from)
