TYPES OF DIGITAL COMPUTERS
• There are four Types of Digital Computer in
terms of size, power and speed.
1.Supercomputer
2.Mainframe Computer
3.Minicomputer
4.Microcomputer
MICROCOMPUTER
 A microcomputer is a small, relatively
inexpensive computer with a microprocessor as its
central processing unit (CPU). It includes a
microprocessor, memory and input/output devices.
 Also known as “personal computer.”
 Includes workstations, desktops, servers, laptops,
notebook.
 Examples are the IBM pc, Apple Macintoshes,
Dell.
MINICOMPUTER
 Minicomputer emerged in the mid-1960s
and were first developed by IBM
Corporation.
 This computer fills the space between the
mainframe and microcomputer.
 This may also be called a mid-range
computer.
 Minicomputer may contain one or more
processors, support multiprocessing and
tasking, and generally resilient to high
workloads.
 Examples are DEC’S, VAX, RANGE.
SUPERCOMPUTER
 The biggest in size, the most expensive in price
than any other is classified and known as
supercomputer.
 It can process trillions of instructions in seconds,
this computer is neither used as a PC in a home
nor student in college.
 This is special purpose computer, most govt.
institution use this type of computer for their
different calculation and heavy job, different
industries use this huge computer for designing
the products.
MAINFRAME COMPUTER
 Mainframe computer is a large, expensive, powerful
computer that can handle hundreds or thousand of
clients at a same time.
 Mainframes store huge amounts of data, instructions,
and information.
 Large Corporations or government agencies that
handle a high volume of data.
 For example, an airlines use mainframe to handle
airlines reservations, banks manage customer
accounts.
 Usually store in aspecial secure rooms that have a
control climate.
