Fast fashion

environmental issues
VALENTINA FORTICH ROMERO
1.What do you think about the problem?
The fashion industry is currently responsible for more annual carbon
emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping
combined. If the industry maintains its course, an increase of 50% in
greenhouse gas emissions is expected within a decade.
2.What would be a possible solution for it?
A possible solution might be mindful purchasing of fast fashion brands
and supporting reform. If you are not entirely sure of which brands to
support, you are not alone. Doing background research on brands
before purchasing clothes can help you become a more informed
consumer and steer your purchases in a manner that aligns with your
environmental values.
3.Do you see this problem in your
community? What do people do about it?
Most people are not informed of all the environmental damage caused
by fast fashion, plus all the promotion that brands do to enter the
trends make people want to belong and feel identified with that
garment. fortunately more and more people become aware of the
clothes they consume.
4.What will you do in the future to help solve
this problem?
Learning to avoid mass-produced, cheap fast fashion makes room in our closets and budgets for
quality apparel from better brands. As you go about building a conscious wardrobe, consider
what you have and what you really need.

• As you seek out quality new clothes, look for:

• Fair trade certification

• Organic cotton
• Local, independent shops
• Ethical, sustainable fashion brands
• Small producers
• Clear reporting on materials and supply chains
