LTE
• PS only network
• It is an all IP network
• 1 shared channel carrying all the data
• Radio connection based on OFDMA
OFDMA
LTE Radio Characteristics
• Radio Bands
• 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 MHz
• Channel Bandwidth
• 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 MHz
• Throughput
• LTE throughput is +100 Mbps and can be achieved with below conditions
• 20 MHz channel bandwidth (100 RB resource block defined by 3GPP)
• 64 QAM

Throughput = 100 RB * 12 Subcarrier * 7 OFDMA symbols * 6 bit of 64QAM * 2 to make it 1msec

LTE Channels
• PDCCH: Physical Downlink Control Channel responsible for UL and DL
scheduling to send and receive data, power control
• PHICH: Physical HARQ Indication Channel responsible for acknowledging the
UE whether the data received by eNodeB or not
• PCFICH: Physical Control Format Indicator Channel responsible for the
transmission of PDCCH and the channel bandwidth
• PDSCH: Physical Downlink Shared Channel responsible for carrying all the data
of the users
UL and DL formats
• DL in 4G use OFDMA scheme

PAPR: Peak to Average Power Ratio in OFDM

Using OFDMA in DL is OK since the power is

high from the eNodeB side
• UL in 4G use SC-OFDM
Using SC-OFDM in UL to prevent surge power
dissipation from the UE battery in short time
LTE PCI
• PCI is the Physical Cell Identity it is divided to 2 groups
• PSS Primary Sync Symbol and have 3 option 0, 1, 2 to determine the exact cell ID from
the group
• SSS Secondary Sync Symbol and have 168 group
• With the combination of both above it will provide 504 Cell IDs
