Definition of PSK
• Phase-shift keying (PSK) is a digital modulation process which conveys
data by changing (modulating) the phase of a constant frequency reference
signal (the carrier wave). The modulation is accomplished by varying the
sine and cosine inputs at a precise time. It is widely used for wireless
LANs, RFID and Bluetooth communication.

Modulation of PSK
Advantages of PSK:
• Carry data over RF better than ASK, FSK.
• Less susceptible to errors compare to ASK, occupies same bandwitdth as
ASK.
• Higher data rate of transmission can be achieved using high level of PSK.
Disadvantages of PSK:

• Lower bandwidth efficiency.

• Binary data is decoded by estimation of phase states of the signal. Hence,
detection and recovery algorithms are very complex.
• Multilevel PSK modulation are more sensitive to phase variations.
Applications of PSK:

• In digital communication
• Used in earliest telephone modems with data rate [2400 and 4800
bits/sec]
