•For artists and natural scientists,
which is more important: what
can be explained or what cannot
TITLE 2 be explained? Discuss with
reference to the arts and the
natural sciences
• Underlying assumptions made in the PT:

• There is a definitive title that has more value

• There are only two outcomes explanation

and unexplainable
• Key words and definitions. Definitions should
be in students’ own words.

• Explained

• ‘More’ important
• The “essential message” of the PT. What is it asking you to
do?

• Implies that one of those two options is more important

for each AOK.

• Focus here is “which is MORE important” suggesting that

both are components to The Arts and Natural Sciences, but
perhaps one is more than the other.

• Focus on the pursuit and production of knowledge within

the Arts and NS.
• What questions does this PT raise?

What is the role of imagination in what cannot be explained?

Is imagination more prevalent in the arts or natural sciences,

or a fine balance in both?
• The role of theory in Natural Science

• The explanation in TOK concepts

•Key things to remember:

●Stick to Arts and Natural Sciences

•Focus here is on “artISTS and Natural

ScientISTS.”
• How can this be related to other AOKs? Sample RLS that could
apply

• Nat. Sciences
- Perhaps what cannot be explained becomes driving catalyst for
new discoveries, therefore the unknown facilitates progress.

• “unexplainable” drives scientific research (it’s no fun

researching what’s already known); leads into hypothesis
testing scientific method
