The Celts.
Celts Origin.
The Celts were thought to come to Britain around 500 BCE.

The Celts came originally from central Europe and settled in

Britain, France and Spain.
The period in Britain immediately before the
Roman period is known as the Iron Age.

The Iron Age comes from the discovery of a new

metal called iron and it was the Celts who were able
to find out how to make iron tools and weapons.
Celtic Houses

Rounded houses with stone.

Roof in a cone shape made of straw.
Clothing.
Pants, jewelry, a large cape and helmet.
Weapons: iron sword, spear and leather
shield.
Celtic Tradition.
The Celts of Gaul. They believed in a life after death, for
they buried food, weapons, and ornaments with the dead

The Irish believed in an otherworld, imagined sometimes

as underground and sometimes as islands in the sea.
Human Sacrifices was practiced in Gaul, that it
occurred in Britain, too. It was forbidden
under Tiberius and Claudius. There is some
evidence that human sacrifice was known in
Ireland and was forbidden by St. Patrick

The Druids also offered human sacrifices for

those who were gravely sick or in danger of
death in battle.
The Celts at war.
Celtic warriors served as mercenaries in
many classical-era armies. The best
known were those who joined Hannibal
in his invasion of Italy during the Punic
War, and who contributed to his victory
at Lake Trasimeno and Cannae.
The Celts at war.
The Celts were not only good warriors,
but they made war an art. They were
grouped in clans with a strong concept
of family and before each battle, they
prayed with the druids and performed
purification rites.
Farming.
It was practiced a basically cereal
agriculture of rain-fed, with different
varieties of wheat and barley resistant to
the cold climate.
Due to poor soil and geographical conditions,
archaeological data testify that the Celts
cultivated an ancient variety of small spelt
(Triticum monococcum) as well as wheat, rye,
oats, millet.
Celtic Symbols.
They are related to mythology during the Iron Age.

Much of Celtic mythology developed before the invention of writing.

The beliefs of Celtic mythology were transmitted during its beginnings mainly orally .
Celtic Symbols.
It is thanks to the writings of Greek and Roman authors. These writings, along
with some of the manuscripts found in the British Isles as well as the Celtic
symbols that these peoples left have made it possible to reconstruct part of Celtic
mythology.
Celt language.

Celt languages or words refer to a fairly large set

of languages derived from the Indo-European
family and as expected, they spread widely from
Galicia to Anatolia, including the British Isles.
There are two groups of Insular Celt languages: British or
Brittonic (Breton, Cornish and Wales) and Goidelic (Irish and its
medieval derivatives, Scottish Gaelic and Manx). Brittonic was
spoken in the British Isles in the Roman period.
Gastronomy.
The celt gastronomy is very vast. It´s compose of
a variety of meats like sheeps and goats, and
some other products that came from other
animals. Due to the agriculture activities they
had some diets based on vegetables and wheat.
Gastronomy.
The celts used to drink a lot of beer. In a research
it was found that they used ceramic containers to
drink something called “mead” that is an
alcoholic drink made up from the fermentation of
honey with water.
Celtic Goddes.
Historically the celts were a society of Warriors using
war to gain agricultural land, cattle and other
valuable resources. They spread their goddess
workshippiing practices across the áreas they
conquered

Religion of the Celts.
The first Celts were polytheists. In addition, they worshipped
certain elements of nature. They attached great importance to
forests and considered certain trees, such as the oak, to be sacred.
Political organization.

Each Celtic tribe had a chief, generally a warrior,

who could be a man or a woman. He received
advice from the druids, who could exercise
justice.
Druids.
Druid, member of the learned class among
the ancient Celts. They acted as priests,
teachers, and judges. They were known
as go-between humans and God.
Druids Symbols.
The Druids have three divisions in their order:
The bards (poets), who wore blue robes;
The ovate (prophets and philosophers), who wore green,
The Druid priests, who dressed in white.
Conclusion.
With this we finish the presentation of the ancient civilization Celts.
We learned some things about they such as their culture, their origin,
traditions, how they were at war, language, some gods.
The Celts came to Britain around 500 BCE, they used the iron for their
benefit, and they were not organized, which romans took advantage of
that and won against the celts.
