Broad Band Network Measurements

What is Broadband?
Broadband is defined as a high bandwidth connection to the internet. Broadband is easier
and faster to use than the traditional telephone and modem as information can be sent
and download much quicker.

Bandwidth:
The maximum amount of data transmitted over an internet connection in a given amount
of time.
Speed :
Broadband speed is measured in megabits per second (Mb or Mbps)

File sizes are measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB )

There are bits in a byte:

A download speed of 8bits will shift 1MB per second.
Broadband Network Speed :
The definition of broadband internet is a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps
upload speeds. Broadband provides high speed internet access via multiple types of
technologies.
Types of Broadband Connection :

Broadband internet is delivered through several different technologies with varying

availability based on location. Which broadband internet service you choose will
depend on your needs, preferences, cost and where you live.
❏ Fiber optic
❏ Wireless
❏ DSL
❏ Cable & Satellite
Fiber optic :
Fiber optics carry lots of data using pulses of light through strands of fiber at the fastest
speeds.

Wireless :
Wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) connects a home or business to the internet using radio
signals instead of cables.
DSL :

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) transmits data over traditional copper phone lines.

Cable & Satellite :

Cable delivers high speed internet over the same coaxial cables that deliver pictures and
sound to your TV set.
Broadband Advantages :
Doesn’t require phone lines or cables

Connection is transportable

Low set-up cost as no wiring required

Broadband disadvantages :

Security: other can hack into your connection

Limited Availability

Technical Knowledge required during set-up to connect to network.
