Typography of SIKKIM

Covering 7096 kms, the cross-section of the state measures 100 km from north to south and 60 km
from east to west. The topography of Sikkim in south blend with the plain land of West Bengal and
gradually gathers height towards the North. So, the altitude of Sikkim ranges from 300m to as high as
8585m, the top of mighty Khangchendzonga.

FLORA AND FAUNA OF SIKKIM
Due to the altitude that varies from sea level to summits that touch the skies, the flora and fauna naturally covers a wide spectrum. Nowhere
in the world in such a small area can one find flora and fauna of all varieties - Tropical to the Alpines. Sikkim's botanical and zoological
richness is awe-inspiring, boasting of more than 4000 species of plants and 30% of all the birds found in the Indian sub-continent. No
wonder Sikkim has been a dream of naturalists. Dr. J. Hooker during the middle of the last century surveyed in the detail the botanical
wealth in Sikkim and his findings were embodied in the 'Himalayan Journal'.

leopard, red panda, Himalayan black bear, musk
deer and flying squirrel to roam in its area. In the
alpine zones, the yaks are quite prominent and
residents have also kept them to get milk, meat,
wool and other useful items from the animal. The
musk deer is a part of endangered species and it can
be found in the upper temperate zones.

AGRICULTURE

Sikkim is a land of villages. Agriculture is the main occupation

of the people. Agriculture has an history of its own in Sikkim.
By and large, Sikkim's wealth is derived from agriculture and
forests. The original inhabitants were not agriculturists. They
led a very primitive life. Gathering of wild roots, fruits,
hunting and fishing were their means of livelihood. When
Bhutia people migrated to Sikkim they started a semi pastoral
economy and sedentary farming. They ploughed only the flat
pieces of land available here and there. Settled agriculture
stepped into Sikkim only with the arrival of Nepali
immigrants. These sturdy, hardy, energetic and innovative
people cleared large tracts of woodlands and made the land fit
for cultivation.
