PLANNING AND SCHEDULING:

NETWORK ANALYSIS
GERALD R. PAJARITO
REPORTER
A SCHEDULE NETWORK ANALYSIS is a graphical
representation of a schedule showing each sequenced activity
and the time it takes to finish each one. It’s used to identify
early and late start dates, as well as early and late finish dates,
for the uncompleted portions of project schedule activities.

 Advantages of Schedule Network Analysis

 Relationships Between Schedule Activities

Schedule Network Analysis in Project Management
• Project schedule network analysis is an analytical technique to
identify critical path and list of critical project activities.
• It further specifies the degree of schedule flexibility in a given
network logic.
• The output of this analysis is a schedule model.
• This project schedule model serves as a basis for
further project execution, analysis, and
reporting.
Critical Path Method (CPM): most common schedule analysis technique

1. List activities
2. Identify dependencies
3. Create a network diagram

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a hierarchical

outline of the tasks required to complete a project. The
WBS “breaks down” the structure of a project into
manageable deliverables.
1. LIST ACTIVITIES
2. IDENTIFY DEPENDENCIES

Here are the task dependencies based on the example above:

• Task B is dependent on A
• Task C is dependent on B
• Tasks C and D can run in parallel
• Task E is dependent on D
• Task F is dependent on C, D, and E
3. CREATE A NETWORK DIAGRAM

EXAMPLE 2: IT Project

The project comprises of the phases

• designing,
• developing,
• implementing,
• testing and
• deploying the software.
The activities are as follows:

1. technical design of module A (duration: 10 days),

DESIGNING 2. technical design of module B (duration: 5 days),
3. development of module A (duration: 15 days),
DEVELOPING 4. development of module B (duration: 20 days),
5. development of feature F in module B (duration: 1 day),
6. implementation of module A (duration: 5 days),
IMPLEMENTING 7. implementation of module B (duration: 7 days),
8. testing of module A (duration: 6 days),
TESTING 9. testing of module B (duration: 10 days),
10. integration testing (duration: 5 days),
DEPLOYING 11. Deployment (duration: 1 day).
ADVANTAGES OF SCHEDULE NETWORK ANALYSIS

Following are some of the advantages of performing project schedule

network analysis:

• SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES: Schedule network analysis specifies the

logical sequence of activities required to achieve project goals. It
uses sequencing and dependencies to establish activity
relationships.
• CRITICAL PATH: Schedule network analysis uses techniques like
CPM and PERT to identify the critical path of a project. The critical
path is the longest path of a schedule network diagram.
• PROJECT DURATION: It analytically estimates the minimum
duration before which the project cannot complete.
• CRITICAL ACTIVITIES: Not all activities can start and finish at the
same time. Activities on critical path are critical activities. Hence
schedule network analysis indicates exactly which activities need
maximum attention of project team.
• SCHEDULE FLEXIBILITY: It is permissible delay in activities that are
not on critical path. It uses mathematical calculations to establish
early start, early finish, late start, and late finish of each activity.
• SCHEDULE MODEL: It is the output of analysis process. The
schedule model helps to conduct risk and scenario analysis of
project schedule.
• SCHEDULE ANALYSIS: The schedule model allows further analysis
like What-if analysis, scenario analysis and schedule compression
techniques.
